Sony may have won this time but the next time it will be do or die as many people have been disappointed especially those who believed the hype so Playstation 3 will face stiff competition but we know Sony they will release about a year or more before the other companies do but I think I will wait for the Homestation instead.

I agree with 144. Many parts of the PS2's life have been disappointing (such as online gaming etc) but then again they haven't rushed it with the risk of bodging it either.

The Xbox is potentially a marvel of gaming. In terms of power and potential it wipes the floor with the PS2 but saying that it certainly doesn't have the same history and reputation.

There are some excellent games available for the PS2 now and there are still only a few Xbox games that interest me.
Halo, Amped and Project Gotham. Now when you consider that at least two of them (not sure about Amped) are launch titles that's not bad. Of course there are others that you may be interested in - but these are the only two for me.

POTENTIALLY the Xbox can be massive and ruin Sony's party.

The Gamecube remains a superb piece of kit that obviously had plenty of support in Nintendo's innovation as always.
I personally am not interested in having one but some of the games (especially the Star Wars one) look incredible considering the hardware power.

I love my PS2. Can't deny that, but Xbox is looking like a really serious piece of kit.
The PS2 has the head start but look what happened to the Dreamcast. DC was online, some of the best games I've ever played (MSR, Virtua Tennis, F355) and Sony's propaganda machine destroyed it all.

Microsoft are not small players, they're new to the console market but they know what they're talking about in so many other ways. Some big games on the way, big plans and I think this time next year will be VERY interesting indeed.

You ape!

PS2 DVD's are about 4.7 Gb - roughly 3 times as much as a GC OD, and that goes about twice as much when you put the Gamecube's more advanced compression techniques.

Besides, very few PS2 games are filling a DVD without filling it with extra token FMV sequences to eat up the space.
And there wouldn't be any trouble putting these games on 2 optical disks instead of one.

If anything, the lack of Gamecube in this topic is down to the fact that Nintendo haven't started marketing in Europe yet while Microsoft have been shouting about the Xbox non-stop.

As SlaveUnit said... It doesn't do DVD "out of the box"...

>plus by the time u add on the broadband adapter and hard drive for the ps2, its going to be about the same size

Qui? You obviously know little about the PS2. The HDD is INTERNAL, it goes in the great big hole in the back and it's much bigger then the XBOX's, about 32GB bigger!! As for the BB adapter, this will add a whole inch to the back of the PS2!! Nothing comes anywhere near the size of an XBOX!!(Apart fomr a small car!!)

>Ps2 does have some quality titles comming however

E.G: MALICE!! (Confirmed this morning, once an XBOX exclusive, now coming to the PS2 with additional levels and better lighting and shodow effects! BTW, Rockstart Games also confirmed today that they ARE NOT making a verion of GTA3 for the XBOX!!), MGS2, FFX... Blah blah...

Exept the DVD part, where you need the plugin.

I have to say, both, u need a xbox for the originality of games, plus everyone should experience games such as Halo and DOA3.

Xbox isnt overpriced considering it does everytihng the playstation 2 does and more straight away.

plus by the time u add on the broadband adapter and hard drive for the ps2, its going to be about the same size (otherwise the hardware is be very expensive)

Ps2 does have some quality titles comming however, plus you need somethign to play in between xbox titles.

its sad to see that Gamecube isn't in this chat, but this is prob due to a MASSIVE oversight by Nintendo in the fact that there cute little mini cd's only hold 1.5gb, meaning that ps2 and xbox can have 11 times the same game on a dvd!!! this means we could see all the best gamecube games ported onto xbox or ps2 on one or two cd's!!!!
(although this will prob never happen)

I'm really disapointed with the Playstation 2, I mean its been in Europe for more than one year and yet only one game has an online feature, look at the Dreamcast's life and by the time it had been in Europe for more than one year it had loads of games using the online feature even if it wasnt playing online there were stuff you could do.

Now look at the X box games that you can play online and there are more than the Playstation 2, and they are just launch titles, if Sony keep playing around this might be the last Sony console for me, because I dont trust their word anymore so after I get an X box my next console would probably be the Homestation because MS do more actions than talk unlike Sony whose plans of Playstation 2 going online still remain as plans even after more than one year in Europe.

One other thing is the fact that X box is more American than Japanese so we are getting treated almost the same, so there X box had a Hard Drive so does ours, look at when the Hard Disc was out in Japan and its posible release date, its like more than one year. With the Playstation 2 we have to wait a long time to enjoy stuff that the Japanese are enjoying and have to pay more (though that happens to us in every industry) but the main thing is we have to wait a long time before we enjoy what the home country is enjoying but with the X box the wait is going to be much shorter.

Speaking of long waits, we (UK Gamers) havent waited very long for the launch of the X box in Europe unlike the wait between the Japaese launch and UK launch date, there was a difference of about eight months compare this with that of the American launch of the X box and the Uk launch date there is only about four months of waiting after the Americans have had their console and in terms of days the X box is launching in the middle of the month while the Playstation 2 launched near the end of November.

I learn't my lesson with the Playstation 2 and that is dont trust the media when it comes to the truth, I believed the hype and even thought that it was the most powerful console thats because the Playstation 2 mags I read only said the good things about the console, I'm also keeping eye closely on info on the X box as I can trust the media anymore to give me the truth in fact most mags are there to make the console sell so they will tell you half truths.

The reason I'm talking about media is that we all know that most thing we read or see in the media aren't true but I thought that mags for consoles were different but I guess I was wrong, they have something to gain by making the console sell well, even most so called "independent" mags are no different. So now judging from my experience Im probably not going to get the Playstation 3 because it looks like X box is much better than the Playstation 2 and so will the Homestation be better than the Playstation 3 though I'll decide for myself when the time comes.

Thanks for reading

Both are excellent:

The PS2 hosts some great franchises like FF, GT and GTA.

The Xbox has some refreshing new titles, like Halo, some querky games, like Jet Set, and a good few exclusives like Munche's Oddysee and DOA3.

The fact is that it's futile asking "which is better", because they are both excellent, and anyone into games would want ot own them both... whether they have the money for both or not is another question altogether!

Oh, and to the person who said the Xbox was too expensive- what price did the PS2 launch at???
