We all wish to be the best at the game we are playing. Surely, once you have reached a certain level, there is no 'better' player than you. Is it just down to practice, practice and more practice? Or are people born with gaming blood?

I have always thought myself a very competent gamer, infact I enjoy playing friends at their 'best game' and winning even though I had never played the game before. I started to wonder if I was born with the abilty to hold a control, or simply that I had played games for such a long period of my life, that being crap just wouldn't make sense!?

Thinking more I remembered the first console game I played, it was Mario, however, this was definetely not the first game I became addicted to... that was a game in the name of Duck Hunt. It was a shooter, infact, I am not even going to talk about the game because every member reading this should know what it is. Anyway, to the point...

*runs to the point*

...I believe that the very first game we enjoy most, is are speciality in the genre later in life. We share a unique bond with that game and continue to want to excel in that type.

Duck Hunt, a shooter. Since that game I remember I wouldn't have had to have played the game before, but I was good at it. Strolling into the arcades my pound coins would somewhat live twice as long as my friends. However I seemed to never grasp a perfect touch on the platformer side, whereas this same friend just breezed through the sidescollers, drinking his orange juice on the way through that straw with the lines on it...*wakes up*

Experience is what makes us human. Is experience what makes us gamers individually? Surely there must be somewhat a link. I don't like footballing games, strange considering I follow and love the sport, however, I know this was one of the last genres I tried in any console game. Could that be the reason I don't like playing it? I think so.

Then another question. If you are just the best of the best, surely there is someone else that is also the best of the best? You therefore cannot exceed past this mark as their is nothing new to experience?

Nobody can be a perfect gamer because then there would be no point in trying to play against them.

Just as I might not be the best at english grammer, and Sniper might not be the best at living. I know I have a special 'eye' for gaming. Are we born with it?

Obviously, some of us are born with better instincts and reactions than others, however forget about genes and 'pastdowngoods' for a sec...

Is it experience that makes us good? or are we born with it?

My dad is terrible at all computer games, so was my mum. Where the hell did I get these hands from then?

Thanks

Nope... It was basically because I wondered how I am actually good at video games....? Stemmed from that.

Sadly, I know I don't own 2000 games myself, I know in total it would be near this ridiculous sum... not sure how many I own at the moment. :-\

Excellent topic this.

I think there is a certain degree of natural talent needed to be good at games. I've played a lot of games over the years... yet it doesn't really seem to show these days. I might pick up the general idea of the game more quickly than most, so I'll win for a while, but it's never long before everyone else catches up with me.

Going back to your idea of the first type of game you played being the ones you like most or do best at.... I wonder if that might apply?

I never really played sports sims.. didn't think much of them. Wasn't that keen on racing games either, or fighters.
That puts me out of the running for most games released these days...

I'm a relic of the past, waiting for the 2D platofrmer to come back.

Anyway. I think it's about time you got NetStorm, er-no. I want to be able to say I beat you something ;)

I think it was because you were exposed to games at such an early age that you adapted to them quite so well.

The pleasure is all mine!

If only you lived next door... I'd kill you at Goldeneye! : D:D

I love Mario Kart 64... it's the only racer i'll never get bored of. My brother got Extreme G 3 for his birthday the other day... it's surprisingly good, actually.... especially since the other two weren't great.

James Bond with a DD44... man i'm invincible! If only the N64 was on-line!!! Rare better do something with Perfect Dark to put it online!

Still... 2000 games?! Blimey... I have about 35... and that's over 2 consoles.
