But lets for a moment ignore the fact Nintendo only control a small proportion of the market and look at why the Gamecube is a success. I never expected Nintendo to finally crush their rivals just yet, no the best Nintendo could hope for was to catch up... and thats exactly what is happening. The Gamecube stormed America, didn't fair as well as the X-box launch but much better than the PS2 launch and although they claim the X-box won Nintendo didn't lose either.
In Japan, despite the slow start, Nintendo have now got the sales it deserves, Number one at Christmas was Super Smash Brothers Melee! Damn right too, but another measure of Nintendo's success is the Gameboy Advance. This wonder handheld is so above the PS2, X-box and Gamecube it is almost funny. It will outsell all three and will rule the console market for years to come.
The conectivitiy between it and the Gamecube makes both systems seem like two halves of the same console. Number two in the Japanese Christmas list was Super Mario Advance 2 (Mario World, the greatest game ever with a few extras). The Fact is a 10 year old game beat everything Sony had to offer, Smash Brothers a title that appeared so very early in the Gamecube's life, beat every title Sony had to offer a console that has been around in that country for over a year and a half, it just shows that the Gamecube can meet Sony's standards only a few months after launch while it took Sony a year.
Measure of success shouldn't be judged on sales, the PS2 has a large user base as it has been out for a very long time but that doesn't mean the Gamecube is better. And now analyst predict Nintendo will have a 30% hold on the market compared with the N64's 22%. Lets face it the high increase in third party support from Capcom, Namco, Acclaim etc... will propell Nintendo to new gaming heights.
Here's to the future
Dringo.
I'm not sure if it's reached that in Japan yet.
Have any Xbox games sold
> over a million yet?
Smash Brothers Melee has.
Have any Xbox games outsold
> that?
errr... but in Japan, the GC has been out for ages, and thus has several million units sold there. Therefore a game need only be bought by a small proportion of console owners to sell over 1 million.
The Xbox has been out in america for FAR less than the GC has been in Japan, and therefore for a game to sell 1 million units then every other console owner would ahve to buy that game!
Do some stats in maths! (sorry- just had my Stats 3 modules for triple maths... got withdrawal syptoms!)
Anyway, sales are, as Meka says, irrelevant. All that matters is that BOTH consoles hit their Xmas targets, and both have great games out/coming out on them.
I just pointed out the official US sales figures to silence the people saying GC was selling better!
Sonic
Actually, it depends on the figures you use... the Xbox sold
> FAR more games! However, by Xmas, the sales were:
Gamecube: 1.3million
> console, with 1.9games per console
Xbox : 1.5million console, with 2.4 games
> per console.
Mind you, this was always going to happen when you consider the markets these consoles are aiming at.
Xbox- young adults with lots of disposable income. They can afford the console and a couple of games.
Gamecube- a younger audience (mostly) who will have saved for ages, and only be able to afford 1 game, or bought for by their parents, who will buy them another game once they finish te one they've got.
Mind you, who gives a stuff how many games got sold?
I wouldn't buy an Xbox if it sold 10 games per Xbox, as not enough of the games appeal to me.
> Not that I know of but overall the ratio of games per console sold is higher for
> the xbox than the GC.
Because the only way Xbox punters could pre order it would be in a big package with 3-5 games.
Besides, if you have the likes of Monkey Ball and Rogue Leader, you don't NEED loads more titles like these two are great and long lasting enough! :-)
its personal opinion.
Mine is that teh gamecube rules
Im not saying the x-box or ps2 is bad.
i in fact like em both i just think the cube clinches it.
nintendo has got it right this time and lets see if they can carry on doing so. As for who will win?
how lkongs a piece of string.
How do you define winning?
the main reason why nintendo didnt fair as well in america as x-box is because they couldnt keep up with demand.
And i think ps2 beat them all over christmas
People didn't want to miss out on the launch so bought the games knowing that they'd probably buy them later anyway.
Gamecube owners, meanwhile, bought one or two games to start with and decided to play these before splashing out on more.
Have any Xbox games sold over a million yet?
Smash Brothers Melee has.
Have any Xbox games outsold that?
People in america are spending an extra $100 for an xbox as it has got better games. I expect the same thing to happen here.
