Not another "now I have your attention posts" this is indeed a post about Sex and gaming. Not another pornographic game post either, in fact I’m on about every day games we play today!

I'm not a major fan of sex, oh yeah of course I am but its more of a private matter for me no need to splash it over magazine covers and other media formats. But over the last few years I have noticed a gradual increase in the amount of innuendo and general sexual acts in computer games here are just a few examples. Dead or Alive 2, big busted females are not uncommon in the gaming industry but this really brought it to the next step. You get pictures of the Dead or Alive girls in Bikini's in both the Dreamcast (need to insert in PC) and PS2 versions and by bumping up your age rating girls become more, *ahem* bouncy.

Conker's Bad fur Day involved a sex scene not visible but audio between a Sunflower and a Bee, and the characters Jugga and Berrie were also wondering around in skin tight or scantily dressed clothes with some humorous remarks from Conker. Fear Effect 2, now come on, lesbians? Why Lesbians? What possessed the game designers to do this? Quit obviously to appeal to the dirty minded teenagers but by doing this are they not ignoring a certain gender? GTA 3 also features Sex we a many of usknow what happens when you grab a prostitute find a nice secluded area and park your car.

So what prompted this sudden change in the way games are designed? Lara Croft that is who, her alone has caused much a stir in the industry with many boys buying the title not necessarily for the gameplay and how many of you noticed how from game to game how she somehow got thinner in some areas but bigger in others? Now Sex is creeping further and further into our everyday games. Who knows what might happen between Mario and Peach in any upcoming title (At the end of Paper Mario, Mario takes Peach to his house!).

Why am I so angry, am I gay or something, not liking these small extras developers are putting in games. Well that isn't the problem it's the fact we are neglecting an entire audience the female gamers. Do Females enjoy watching two females kiss each other? Do they like the fact that Conker is transfixed by Jugga's erm other assists. No I am sure this isn't the case and so for a gaming industry that is supposedly evolving into bigger and better things why do we constantly neglect the female gamers?

I have heard many girls go on about Mario and Zelda, they never talk about Fear Effect and Tomb Raider, I wonder why??? You see Sony isn’t targeting the teenage market they are targeting the Male Teenage market. Nintendo are no saints either "Shall Thou Get the girl or shall thou play like one!" honestly Nintendo! Shoving Sex into mainstream games are all well and good but lets keep it balanced. The woman from Thumbandits pointed out that in Baldurs gate we have ugly men next to beautiful Women definatly a mans game. The fact is she liked it and only criticized it for the fact it aimed at the male gamers. Surly focusing on the male gamers alienates the females, the Woman from Thumbandits enjoyed the game and other Women might as well but unfortunately it doesn't appeal to females so they probably won’t bother, are the developers losing out?

Sigh, here's to the future.

There are loads of games on the Dreamcast with good "girl" characters: Shenmue1+2, Space Channel 5, Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi 2 (I've named myself after cabbie Cinnamon in Crazy Taxi 2).

But I also like so-called "boys games" with macho lead characters like Jack Wade from Headhunter. I certainly don't wanna play Barbie games or horse riding sims. Give me the Dead Or Alive girls any day! It's good to beat up muscle men with chicks in bikinis. It doesn't bother me.

Mystique :D

And the king girls are intrested in games i know many girls intrested in games they normally play on their brothers machine.

But if we opened the market a little and let the girls in the 5% might become 50% as it should be. It will make the industry bigger if games appeal to over half the world but we ignore female gamers and if developers make sex in games something for the men then this isn't helping...

There is nothing wrong with sexual refrences in games, as long as it is marketed to the appropiate audience.

Yeah, that is true. If you pick up a hooker and stop in a deserted area, prefferebly a lane then both of you, well, climb into the back of the van and, let's just say that it shakes about a bit...

I'll be the next person to say "Ahem!"

Lets say the games market is worth £100 (obviously not but it'll work for this point)

Now if the developer lose the 5% they are effectively losing £5. Leaving them with the £95. Now do you think they'd risk losing the 95%, by making games more acceptable to females, just to try and attract that extra 5% - I think not? It's not going to happen my friend - it's business and in business cash is king! (Well, actually I am The King, but that’s another point entirely!)

I don’t think the game industry Need’s to attract more females, it could certainly do with them – hell for the last 10 years I’ve done nothing more than work with other blokes – I’d kill for a few ladies in the business! Girls who play games do so because they like playing games and most don’t care if there is a bias in sexual prejudice.

And for that matter girls who don’t play video game don’t turn away because they think games are sexist – it’s because they don’t want to play games, it’s just not something that interests them. It wouldn’t matter if developers made games with less sexism they still wouldn’t be interested in the fundamental thing of sitting in front of a TV playing games! Just like the Girlfriend – she just doesn’t like games – even if they made Lara Croft more ‘PC’ she’d still think games are boring.

And developer know this – that’s why they stick to there 95% and make games they know they’ll like – and if a few female gamers tag on for the ride then all the better!
