Hi

I want to play Quake 3 and Counter-Strike against my brother on his computer by connecting my computer to his computer with a cable so we can play Quake 3 or Counter-Strike.

Can you tell me what cable I need to buy from Special Reserve to play head-to-head in Quake 3 and Counter-Strike?

I don’t want to buy any network cards, I just want a cable so we can play head-to-head in Quake 3. Does head-to-head gaming require a network card?, or can you make do with a cable connecting the 2 computers together?

How would you access the multiplayer head-to-head games in Quake 3 and Counter-Strike with 2 computers connected together by a cable?

Thanks if you can answer some or all of my questions.

Hi

Thanks for your replies.

Can't I just use a Null Modem Cable? or does that require a network card?

I found this lead on UKPC.net:

UNIVERSAL NULL MODEM CABLE (1.8 metre) for PC. connects two PC’s via any serial port (9 pin or 25 pin). 9 pin & 25 pin connectors at both ends. 1.5 MB / min data transfer rate. Ideal for data transfer or head to head network games (see list of compatible titles).

RJ45 is just standard CAT5 network cable for use with a hub/switch, and RJ45 Crossover cable is used for directly linking 2 PCs without a hub. It still requires you to have some sort of network adaptor (why not get a PCI one? if it's only for gaming, you could pick up 10mbit card for £5-10), although you can get ones which plug in to your USB ports and let you attach RJ45 cable to them.

I believe SR do some sort of USB netowrking kit, but I'd much rather do it the "proper" way especially as the whole setup could be done for ~£30.

Cross-Over RJ45? Is that what they call a null-modem cable?

You need a network of some sort for Half Life and Quake 3.. if you really don't want to have to open up both computers and install network cards you could look into some USB network adaptors.. and a bit of crossover RJ45.
