When i play dts dvds on my ps2 the sound is coming out as only prologic. i am using an optical lead and everything seems to be working but my home cinema cannot see a digital signal. I have enabled the digital output on the ps2 but still no lick. Any ideas anyone?

Seen it somewhere - usually I end up playing with things like that anyway without reading the manual.

It'll all go horribly wrong one day when I ignore that 'don't put head in Microwave' message....

my point exactly. a coax output on the ps2 would be cheaper to manufacture, and be better quality.

harking back to your earlier post, fibre optic cables do vary in quality. The quality of the glass, and diameter of the cable can radically increase the price and ( as I was told be a rep at work) the image quality if you are using it for imaging. But for hifi, you'd never spot the difference.

Or ruined hi-fi equipment!

My DVD player manual states that you should never turn on the digital output unless connected to a digital amp, as it can result in a loud sound which can damage both your hearing and equipment!

Can't remember if the PS2 manual states the same.

this is kinda for mr coates since the same my hifi amp I

Coaxial should be superior (due to not having to convert from electrical to light back to electrical) but my Yamaha (DSP-AX 620) has 4 optical inputs and only one coax so the PS2's optical connection suits me fine!

I can see why you have to tell the PS2 to output dolby digital and DTS as it defaults to prologic which every telly/hi fi can use. If it defaulted to digital then non digital/dts listeners would just get white noise. Similarly for computers, if you have the latest graphics cards you can activate certain features in a game which would not be available to other users.

Also, why does my yamaha hifi pick a coaxial cable input over and optical one ? A co axial output on the ps2 would be great, we could all make our own digital leads at home !

good topic, very handy hints.

is it me, or is there a hit and miss element with dvds and games having to select hardware options to get the 'best' sound ?

If your tv, dvd player, and hifi aren't setup perfectly, its a good 5 mins of remote thumbing to get it all going. Pc's are pretty much all plug amd play, why not hifi ?

Adrian was right, I bought the new cable (£30!!) and it still didn't work so I decided to go to the last resort - RTFM (read the f*cking manual, as I'm always telling computer losers, sorry users) and sure enough it tells you about the DVD menu when you are actually watching a DVD. Stupid me. All I've got to do now is return the latest cable to Dixons and get the cheap one (£7.99) back.

Thanks for your help.
