anyway. its dead. i think. Just looked at price list for a data recory agency, and they want about £900. hmmm.
Any ideas? - Turbo? Tyla?
My HDD did this once. I finally worked out it was because it wasn't plugged in properly. Either that or your needle may have jammed, which is a very bad thing. Check the connections or do as they say below.

If Windows isn't recognising the partition using "dir" under dos isn't going to help anything. DOS and Windows (9x) use the same mechanism to deal with the underlying filesystem.
> you want to pay out the 900 nicka, you may be abl to save your drive as it may just be a faulty master boot record to try and fix this go to DOS prompt with your windows boot disk and type A:\format C: /mbr and that will repair you master boot record (YOU WILL LOSE ALL YOUR DATA THOUGH)
You don't need to format any partitions to restore your MBR. You're probably refering to the command "FDISK /MBR" which is worth a try if you can boot with a dos rescue disk.
> if it is a hard drive crash then i have fixed this once by doing a low level format (last resort)
If the head has physically crashed into the magnetic surface of the harddisk any amount of coercing it with the BIOS or some low level format utility isn't going to help. Low level formats generally /aren't worth the stupid amount of trouble they cause/.
What operating system are you using?
What kind of harddisk (manufacturer)?
How big is it (usually measured in gigabytes)?
What data have you lost? How important is it to you? Do you have the original operating system install CD(s)?
All I can suggest is to back up your data as soon as you can (if you can) onto CD or other media and purchase a new harddisk, which will be much less than £900 (probably between £60 and £120 for a decent size IDE HDD). If you've lost data which is worth £900 to you, by all means pay someone else to try and recover it, but give it a go yourself first.
hope i have helped
