I went in there today and bought Project IGI 2 for the PC, and Sly Raccoon for the PS2.
Some of you will know that I own all three consoles, and as such I always have a look at every section to see what's out. So, after picking up the games mentioned, I went down to the back of the store to check out the Xbox and Gamecube sections.
Looked in the Xbox section and almost picked up Dead to Rights, but didn't. Then looked at the Gamecube section, and all they have is the 'Top 10' games. That's it! Absolutely nothing else, in terms of software. Plenty of other Gamecube stuff - cables, controllers, carry-cases and so on.
It's odd, because when you hear the staff talking, they always seem to speak highly of Nintendo, and - if the store is mostly empty - they're always playing on the Gamecube demo pod, or a GBA. Today they were pushing pre-orders of the GBA-SP.
Strange, then, that they seem to have no desire to push the GC and its software. I know the games are a little slow arriving, but there are more than ten games available.
:D
Anyhoo. Free country.

For 'well known fact' read 'urban legend'

I will never agree with that. At the risk of being labelled a fanboy, what exactly do people think is selling PS2?
*Allegedly* it has average games, crap DVD playback, and generally nothing going for it. So why are people buying it? Initially you could have said hype, but that's no longer an issue. Hype only lasts until people realise the truth.
The machine has been around for three years or so now (depending on territory), and if it was *genuinely* bad, sales would be decreasing, or would have ceased altogether. But they're not.
Last Christmas was supposed to be the acid test - all three machines had been available for some time, and we were - according to some people - supposed to witness the great downfall of Sony and the PS2.
What happened? Sales went through the roof.
Now I'm sorry, but a games console with no decent software does not keep selling the way the PS2 has, whether it plays DVDs or not. The reason sales have continued to grow is not because "I'll buy one because my mates have them", it's simply because people have played the games on friends machines, enjoyed them and wanted one for themselves.
While the games have been advertised, the machine - basically - has not. In the run up to Christmas, Sony probably had less advertising throughout the media than both Microsoft and Nintendo, and still outstripped both combined.
I also don't agree with this 'GAME' conspiracy theory, because - despite the shelf space issues - my local store continues to push Xbox quite vehemently, often with the staff all dressed in black T-shirts with 'XBOX' emblazoned across them.
PS2 pretty much sells itself, and no merchandise will do that without a certain amount of quality. It's about time some people stopped coming up with excuses and labels like 'bloody casual gamers' and other insults to hide behind, and instead owned up and admitted that the reason PS2 sells is simply because it offers most people what they want - a good system, with more than enough quality software.
Granted some will buy it "because all my mates have one", but the same can be said of any of the systems. I bought my own Gamecube because I played on a friend's machine and I liked it - but I bought it because I wanted one, not just because he had one.
How many of you have played a friend's PS2? Did you like it? No? Okay, so did you buy anyway because your friend had one? No? Then at least have the decency to credit other people with the same intelligence, and stop assuming that they're just stupid and bought one anyway to fit in. You didn't do it, so why would they? Or do you just assume that everyone is more stupid than you? (IB - don't answer that - we know!)
More people have bought PS2's because more people like more of the games on it. It really is that simple. Their choice is no less valid than those who chose to buy a Gamecube or an Xbox, and those of you who think it makes them any less of a gamer really need to get over yourselves and deal with it.
And the same goes for the PS2 fanboys who fell similarly about GC/Xbx owners.

It's just a well-known fact.
But it's a fact that Nintendo could've prevented, had they been bothered - PS2 didn't have to buy that much space when it came out as it's opposition at first was the failing Dreamcast, and it quickly got itself shelf-space anyway. But as the launch of Xbox and GameCube got nearer, Sony decided to buy shelf space in some of the bigger stores. GAME, mainly.
So, as Microsoft and Nintendo were releasing their new consoles, Sony's PS2 had a lot of shelf space, which was why, even as two new consoles were released, people continued to buy PS2s.
Microsoft though, were clever, and a few months before their Xbox was due for release, they started supplying shops with Xbox's and they also began to order shelf space in advance, which leads me back onto the fact I mentioned above. "It's something Nintendo could've prevented, had they been bothered" - they didn't give much information out about the GameCube to retailers, supply them with GameCubes or even order that much shelf space.
And what er-no said is totally true. The PS2 is selling despite it being a fairly poor attempt at a games console. Multimedia device with average games, more like...
Ah well - maybe this will be another thing Nintendo will learn about when the time comes for releasing another console. Anyway, GameCube will gain shelf space soon enough, too. Metroid Prime, Super Monkey Ball 2, Hitman 2, Zelda: Wind Waker, Mario Kart GC, Mario Golf GC, Mario Tennis GC, Skies Of Arcadia: Legends, F-Zero GC and Soul Calibur 2 in the line-up for this year alone - how can GameCube fail???

Eh? Where did you get this from then?
I have no idea why GAME decide to stock so little GC stuff.
Its a shame, A real shame.
Even though most GAME employees try to reccomend me a PS2 every time I look at the GC/Xbox section...

Well, Sony get he most, that's for sure. It's quite simple. I think the xbx gets more than GC. It's what you'd expect, xbox has been out for longer.
Its such a shame! :(
Which is actually one of the main reasons the stupidly crap PS2 keeps selling.

Hardly. GC gets less than Xbox.
PS2 - Around 5 shelving units, plus on entirely for pre-owned.
PC - About 3 shelving units.
GC - 3 shelving units.
X-Box - 2.5 shelving units.
To be fair, I suppose they have to do it all in order of demand. Lets just hope some shops don't neglect the GameCube when top games like Metroid Prime are released.
