It seems that the older you get the less exciting events become. No longer is there that excitement that Santa Claus, the anticipation of wanting to know what we're getting. It is just like another day. The first time it happens is magical, although the first time we can't really remember, we were too young. But once you get older, you begin to appreciate it and understand how wonderful Christmas is.

But does anyone really understand what we are celebrating? The more and more you think about it the more and more pointless it becomes. To start with, there is the Religious part about it, but many of us know that Jesus was not born on 25th December and nor is Christmas taught in the bible.

Then we give each other gifts. To celebrate what? We're not really celebrating the birth of Christ, the Son of God. But because of ONE person who decided to give a gift to someone, hundreds of years later down the line we have now found ourselves living in a society that doesn't understand something so simple that has turned into a time in which Christmas is just an opportunity to receive gifts.

The amount of posts people must have seen on the forums over the last few weeks asking other people what they want for Christmas is a tremendous amount. All of a sudden the thought of greed takes over and no longer do we think about others, but think about what we can get out of other people to benefit ourselves.

Now maybe I’m being a little harsh here, but it is mainly true. I also want to bring onto the topic of fate now. Can you actually imagine what we would have been doing yesterday if St. Nicholas had not given to one family? If he was never born. If for some reason he just had a change of heart. Then where would we be today? I ask you, as I don’t know the answers.

The same could go for anything. Where might we be today, if * didn’t come along. There are times in our lives that change things and there are times in which it’s for the best and sometimes not. Great people walk forward and venture us into new heights. We might not appreciate these people or even realise what they have done. But they continue to exist.

Nowadays, we treat our celebrities like kings. Status is everything and people are always wanting. Sometimes, all you want is someone to appreciate something you have achieved, but most of the time we are looking to the future to create this perfect world for ourselves.

Many times in our lives we have made the wrong decision. It could have been marrying the wrong person or something as simple as taking the wrong corner. But what is around that corner could determind the rest of your life.

We live in a world in which is seems nothing is decided for us. There are too many 'what ifs' and too little answers. But yet we ignore the things that are most important. Have you ever looked at a 'tramp' lying there on the streets and had a good chuckle? Or are you one of the few who would give him some money, could you give him some money in trust?

Could you give up your personal belongings to take a venture into helping people?

Another thing is why is it that the creators of this world get little credit for achievement? At school, the nerds are the people who get bullied whilst the strong and immature always seem to be the popular. But when you leave school, the nerds are suddenly looked up to because of success. May be it is the immature and inexperienced thoughts of a teenage mind.

The creators of the world, the intelligent people who make a difference seem to get no credit. People like David Backham, whose only talent consists of kicking a ball get more recognition then people like Gandhi and Oskar Schindler, whose talent consists of tremendous determination and perseverance.

I've went on enough now, I'll stop.

I know you said you copied it from Chat, but you didn't say where from, and I was shamelessly plugging my topic...

And now a reply to the original post:

Why does this happen every year? People go out of their way to remind us exactly why we celebrate christmas, birth of christ and all that, and how we should remember it all, and not be consumed by greed like we obviously are...

Everyone knows that at the back of their minds anyway, but what of it? People religious enough to care that much, or believe in it strongly, are far in the minority. Even if people don't think about the 'meaning of christmas', what of it?

If it makes people happy, I'm not about to complain that they aren't doing it right. What's the point? Every christmas, people give gifts, and recieve them, see relations, and generally have a good time. Once in the year, people are nice to each other, give presents, and are generally pretty happy. The important thing isn't that we remember christ, the important thing is that people are good to each other.

Another point:
David Backham may get more recognition than Gandhi and Oskar Schindler, but that's only temporary. Celebrities don't live in people's minds forever, but people who change the world do.

His son, Jeff, and wife, Sheila are expected to be exonerated of all responsibility, but Mr Smith himself faces up to six months in prison for his crimes."

Copied from something I said on the Chat forum:

Well, ALL holidays are commercialised... here are some examples:

Christmas:

Santa used to be a tall thin man who ALWAYS wore green or yellow. However, one year Coka Cola came along, and did an ad campaign showing Santa as a big, fat, Coka Cola red character who clearly could never get down your chimney!

And look at pictures of Santa now... hmmmmmmm

Haloween:

Do you celebrate All Saints Day? My guess is no. Well, the same was true about All Hallows Eve, but American pumkin companies got together, and made a big things about the day and having to have pumkins...

Mother and Father's Day:

Well, at least the other two holidays existed before commercialisation... but this holiday was INVENTED by card companies so that everyone with parents (ie, almost everyone!) would have to buy card for them!

I'd love to know of anymore such holidays people.

This is some pretty deep sh**, but agree with Xmas, far too comercialised and has lost its true meaning.

Calm down people. I only spent a few minutes writing a topic about my personal feelings on the world. This ain't a time to get all sentimental ;-)

I've thought axactly the same thing before Grix. The highlights of 2001, the main things that have stood out have all been events of disaster. 'Foot and Mouth', 'September 11th', 'The War on Terroism and 'Sarah Payne's killer'.

It's the things that we are most interested in, but yet we don't really want to know about. If I died today, I mean right this second the thing that fears me most is that it'll be a case of 'who??'. I've done nothing amazing in my life, I've not really done anything to say I'm proud of apart from perhaps being a good friend to people.

Whilst with celebrities we have our frontpage headlines plastered with their pictures for about 3 weeks after their death.

Yes; it's hard to see.

Yes; people die.

Yes; he was famous.

No; he was not any different from the rest of us

No; he never helped improve the world

No; perhaps he didn't even care

Then we find all this stuff about their lives on tele in whcih millions of people tune into. Why are you so interested in someone elses life when you have your own to worry about.

What I want to make from my life, is for someone one day anytime before I die, to turn around to me and see that I have achieved something. Whether it is something that has never happened before, an amazing accomplishment, something simple which had a great effect or just achieving anything then I will rest in peace.

hmmm... not really sure what to type after that Grix. I don't know if I can understand where you were, in your mind I mean, when on the brink of suicide, but I know the feeling that every day is the same, and I know what it is to be confused in this world. Up until a few years ago I had very little to believe in. I didn't (and still don't) have a religion, and although I was sceptical of this world, I accepted the simple fact that life wasn't fair, and that if I didn't profit, or gain from a situation, then someone else would.

Now I have found something. I cannot say I was ever in a situation as dire as what Grix described, but I basically had nothing to believe in. I'm not going to attribute finding a whole new state of mind to finding a kind of music I loved and could believe in, but I did find punk music, and it did help open my eyes to the world. Try to start thinking about others too, and see the effects of my actions, rather than just taking the attitude that if I didn't suffer it was ok. Now I basically look back on my life and realise how much of an @sshole I could have (arguably still did :D) turn out to be if I hadn't had that change in my state of mind.

I now have beliefs and morals, and I think basically in life you must stand on your beliefs and just stand up for what you think is right. If people take the mick out of you for what you believe in what does it matter? At least you are standing up for something, which is better than just sitting back and doing nothing.
