Recently, I have recieved a lot of applications for Web Design, as I just learnt my first bit of HTML. Here's a quickie guide to what programmes to get for excellent web design.

Dreamweaver 4
This programme is the ultimate in quality web design. I now know what I was missing when I was using Frontpage 2000! The layout is really sleek and when you publish it, it has a very professional look to it, thanks to the flash objects, such as text. You can do as Mr. Nice Guy did and write the HTML in Wordpad and insert it into Dreamweaver.

Flash 5
Dreamweaver really covers this in basics, such as text, but Flash 5 allows you to make more complex elements, such as animations and movies. I tried to make a movie, but found it insatiabally difficult - this could be that I haven't really explored it but it's worth the dosh. You can make very good promos.

Adobe Photoshop 6
This has been named the best photo editor in the world and it is certainly great. I only got it the other day, but the text looks very professional and sleek. There are so many buttons that it will take ours to discover the ins and outs of this application. At £300, it's not the cheapest of software, but the best.

Fireworks 4
Made by the Macromedia team (Flash, Dreamweaver), you can expect this to be of a high standard. Fireworks is a programme that lets you create flash elements, such as banners etc. This programme is used by the professionals and so is a good buy. I suggest getting a trial version first, as the interface can be a little hard to digest on first sitting.

If you have these 4 programmes, you can create an excellent website! Good luck!

IMHO Dreamweaver is nothing with Fireworks, but that's just what I think.

Without a doubt there are programs better suited to making professional and fully functioning sites than Dreamweaver, but I don't think that it's by any stretch of the imagination a lowly tool.

If used properly, Dreamweaver is a fantastic tool, and the results can really impress.

Unless your looking to go into web-design professionally, there's no need to look anywhere other than Macromedia's range (Dreamweaver/Fireworks/Flash). Even at the top level programs such as Dreamweaver are used, because it IS that good.

Modify your output options under File/HTML, this should clear alot fo the exported stuff up. Plus... turn off shims... these just create more headaches.

Wow.. HotDog... I remember that! I used to use BBEdit too on the Mac before moving to Dreamweaver. I too use DW for rapid prototyping and look and feel, especially as some of the new tool aid productivity immensley. UltraDev is EVIL, after spendign a year playing with it, we decided it was just too messy and binned it asap. VisualInterDev gets used a lot here, but in the end, it's not really the programs that are to blame for the final output, anything non-dynamic can be made water tight by hand...

Your site is overcrowded as it is. You really don't need anything else on it. Besides, you really should learn how create your own. If money's an object, grab the GIMP for Windows from gimp.org (and the patches) and spend some time doing the tutorials. You can create some really stunning works of art using it.

I need some lovely graphics for my site. I've got the 'free' versions of Flash5, Dreamweaver and Fireworks4, but to be honest with you I don't know how to use them and the only one that I'd really want to learn to use if Flash5, although Fireworks4 is very cool.

My site needs something refreshing and poetic on it to look amazing. Any offers? ;-)

Agreed.

I always use Fireworks at some point in websites, and from there it makes sense to drop it into Dreamweaver, if not only to resolve links. From there, just save it, drop it into 1st Page/Quanta+, get rid of all those annoying extra table rows etc and clean it up. That's about as far as I go with Dreamweaver; any further and it *really* starts to mess stuff up.

Dreamweaver has it's place though, rapid-prototyping of the look and feel of a web site for instance. Plus, not everybody can afford a copy of a high-octane Integrated Development Environment like Visual InterDev, say.

Many companies will have people to do the look-and-feel in something like Dreamweaver, then the technical nitty-gritty will be done by the developers. In many cases, I have created page layout templates in DreamWeaver, then moved into Visual InterDev to tidy it all up and get to work on the harder stuff.

I started my HTML writing with.. HotDog by Sausage Software, moved to GoLive on the Mac, then shifted to DreamWeaver on PC, then caught on to UltraDev, then moved over to Visual InterDev for all my ASP work. For professional web site creators there are different levels at which you can use the software tools on offer.

Now I use TCL and use something barely better than a text editor at work. Dammit.
