Recently, I have recieved a lot of applications for Web Design, as I just learnt my first bit of HTML. Here's a quickie guide to what programmes to get for excellent web design.

Dreamweaver 4
This programme is the ultimate in quality web design. I now know what I was missing when I was using Frontpage 2000! The layout is really sleek and when you publish it, it has a very professional look to it, thanks to the flash objects, such as text. You can do as Mr. Nice Guy did and write the HTML in Wordpad and insert it into Dreamweaver.

Flash 5
Dreamweaver really covers this in basics, such as text, but Flash 5 allows you to make more complex elements, such as animations and movies. I tried to make a movie, but found it insatiabally difficult - this could be that I haven't really explored it but it's worth the dosh. You can make very good promos.

Adobe Photoshop 6
This has been named the best photo editor in the world and it is certainly great. I only got it the other day, but the text looks very professional and sleek. There are so many buttons that it will take ours to discover the ins and outs of this application. At £300, it's not the cheapest of software, but the best.

Fireworks 4
Made by the Macromedia team (Flash, Dreamweaver), you can expect this to be of a high standard. Fireworks is a programme that lets you create flash elements, such as banners etc. This programme is used by the professionals and so is a good buy. I suggest getting a trial version first, as the interface can be a little hard to digest on first sitting.

If you have these 4 programmes, you can create an excellent website! Good luck!

Yeh, UltraDev does the same thing to ASP coding as it does to JavaScript coding, ie, takes 10 lines to do something that can be done in 3!

hhehehe, there are too many "web designers" out there who are great print designers, but do not understand that the Web is basically an interface, and needs to be treated as such - not a piece of paper!

Scripting is definitely an advantage in DW, but I usually knock off a PHP script and run it from the command line. Are, the joys of shebang!

Plus an understanding of what is possible on the web, useability and knowing it's boundaries (to an extent)...

Dreamweaver to Web is what Quark Express id to the print industry... It's powerful, widely used and Industry Standard.

>If used properly, Dreamweaver is a fantastic tool, and the results can really impress. Unless your looking to go into web-design professionally, there's no need to look anywhere other than Macromedia's range(Dreamweaver/Fireworks/Flash).

Every Profession design/Web agency I know of uses Macromedia products in their production tools. The key words here are "Intergration" and "Exstensibility" All of MM's tools are designed to intergrate with each other improving work flow and project tracking. As well as a level of consistency. They also allow you to expand on their abilities by creating new scripts that work within the program itself.

I've been using DW since it first arrived back in 1998/9 and have mastered most of it's ability and have now moved into extending the abilities of DW by developing my own scripts, Something no other editor that I know of allows you to do. the Same goes for Fireworks and Flash, all of these are extendable if you know Java/Javascript and alloe you to alter the program to do what you want with it!
