It's alright.

Not the best film I've ever seen, not even the best film I've seen this year.
But it's alright.
Needed more monkeys and boobs.

Seriously though, it was alright.
I'm not even slightly a fan of beardy fantasy stuff, pixies make me angry. But I enjoyed this one. Don't have a burning need to see it again but it's certainly worth a watch.

Good things:
Christopher Lee throwing down in a wizard fashion.
Viggo Mortensen whupping orc-ass with fire.
The Balrog
The Cave Troll
The overall imagery - incredible effects that don't look like effects and sets.
The Mines of Moria. These things are MASSIVE

Bad things:
Liv Tyler - What was the point of her being in it? For 1:15 screen time?
Sean Astin's big fat ginger face
Elves - They look poncy and look like they've escaped from a Poison video.
Agent Smith. In drag.

--

I think my viewing was ruined by the utter chimps in the cinema.
These are people that clearly went because it was an evening out and The Sun called it "one of the best movies of the year".
They had no idea of what the film was about, had never heard of Lord of The Rings and just fidgeted because Bruce Willis didn't blow anything up.
Two blokes behind me stood up and said "What a crap ending. They didn't get rid of the ring".
After a brief chat with them, I learned that they had never heard of the book, had no idea there are another 2 films to come and came because "there were swords in it, like Braveheart and stuff"

I nearly set them on fire.

So, Fellowship of The Rings.
It won't cure famine, it won't bring world peace.
It's a good movie with pixies and elves and beardy wizards riding eagles.

It's alright.

Just saw the film... haven't read all the posts, but my views:

The film was excellent... truely fantastical- just think of the BBC's version of gormonghast taken to new levels.

Great film. Msut see. Drunk. Need sleep. Good night.

Yeah!
Me and Mrhappy have similar tastes on movies and music (although not the Robson & Jerome thing..), that's all.

I don't understand where this wild-eyed "LOTR IS THE BEST!!!" thing is coming from, because that's your opinion.
For you, it is the best film ever and that's cool.
Me?
I think The Cannonball Run is the best film ever made.
It has jokes, drama, more stars than you can possibly name and women wearing shiny jumpsuits in Lamborghinis.
What more could you ask?

This isn't a "Goatboy vs Stryke" thing mate, this is "Movie fans vs non-movie fans"
Personally I can argue with you all day, because it's not personal and I never take offense at anything you say.
I love arguing about movies with people, and music and religion and all sorts of stuff.

It forces people to defend their views instead of saying "I think X is crap" and walking away.
An argument (as opposed to a fight) is always a healthy thing, as long as two people shake hands and don't fall out afterwards.

You love LOTR, I don't.
Easy-peasy.
I don't say you are a geek for being into it, Snuggly did.

Oh so now I am dragged into this messy star wars vs LOTR debate am I? Well I'll tell you which is the best trilogy.. neither!! It's the obscure cult French classis 3 Colours trilogy... haha I'm joking. Lighten up Stryke. I am planning to vote for you as the next notable. I would like to take this point to clarify one thing. I like watching films. It just so happens that many people box themselves into watching mainstream films, I try and watch everything. My favourite film is Edward Scissorhands, that's hardly left-field is it? One thing I do like to do is argue, I'm applying for Law for Chrissakes! Sure I try and indocrinate people with my obscuranist films and sometimes music, and sure I slate people who like Limp-kin Park-type bands but it's nothing personal. If you want to come and slate my music tastes come on. I own a Robsome and Jerome album, it wasn't actually my fault, but I own one. I know that I don't get as much as abuse as I give but that's more of a regret than a triumph; I want people to argue with me. So it's petty and juvenile but who cares this is a discussion forum. I try and depersonalise any criticisms I make so that I am not insulting the poster, but rather the film/book/music of which they are expounding the virtues. I admit to liking obscure things but I don't hate the mainstream. I just try and broaden other people's horizons, so that they don't spend their whole lives judging the greatness of a film in terms of Star Wars or, god forbid, notting hill as one person I know does.

As for hanging on Goatboy's every word.. I admit to posting more in Goatboy discussions but that's only because they tend to be more interesting. I would rather read something interesting than some of the I hate pop/nu-metal/x/y/z topics that are badly written in txt msg language about something banale. Or reading a discussion where people exchange thoroughly hackneyed opinions. I read around 90% of your threads too stryke. You shouldn't be so angry about the LOTR debate, I think that secretly you are nursing a massive insecurity complex brought on by your abandonment of Dogma as your favourite film. You're wondering whether it was a wise decision to leave the cult classic stability of Dogma for the untested waters of LOTR.. or maybe you are taking this too seriously. Lighten up, it's nearly Christmas. And if I ever post anything annoyingly obscure come and give me some abuse!

Not at all Stryke.
I go to great pains to say "only my opinion".
I can't help it if I have strong opinions, they're never meant to be taken seriously or to cause offense.
I apologise if that is the case.

As for people "hanging on my every word", I'm not going to kid myself I'm that important.
I liked this movie, it wasn't fantastic, it wasn't crap.
I enjoyed it.

Just because I don't like something, doesn't mean it's crap.
I don't like Lord Of The Rings, but millions of people the world over do.
I never say "it's crap", I say "I think it's crap" or "I thought it sucked", I don't attack people because they disgree with me about anything.

I know I can come off as a mouthy get, but that's just me.
I never go out of my way to annoy people, I can respect that people feel differently than I do.

Look at Ant, he's Christian and I'm not.
We have arguements, nice ones, about that stuff but at the end of the day I respect others opinions.

Except for beardy wizard pixies.
Those guys are just odd.

I wasn't, and it isn't just about this. Anything that you don't like gets instant criticism. It's music as well. If it's mainstream, that means its rubbish. If people haven't heard of a low budget cult film, that means they're sad. It's not just you, it's misterhappy too. Now I get the sad little people who hang on your every owrd yelling at me. Fun.

So far, my favourite Peter Jackson movie has to be Braindead. That's on soon, I think.

Really crappy special effects, a little monkey thing that bites people, and a kung fu priest.

It rules.

Jeez Stryke, calm down.
Anyone would think you made this film.

Relax mate and don't try and force people to like a movie, it's personal taste.
See, fantasy fanboys that take this stuff waaay too seriously - I was talking about those earlier and someone had a hissy fit.

Tsk tsk.
