Trying to do maths homework (revision) I cannot do it and I have wund myself up into a state where I 'know' I am going to fail my GCSE and work in Burger King for the rest of my life, any help would be appreciated if you show me how you got the answers, thanks.

1. Find correct to 2 decimal places, the solutions of the equation

x² - 3x – 3 = 0

You must show working, do not use trial and improvement method

10 a) Calculate 651.6 – 4.02 / 7 – 8.2²

10 b) Using indices, write 392 as a product of its prime factors

12 a) solve the equation “6(x + 2) = 2x – 6

12 c) Make “d” the subject of the formula

S = ½ xd²

That multiplies out to give x^2 +x -3x -3 which equals x^2 -2x -3.

You need to use the formula which is something like -b ± root(b^2-4ac)/2a

It says calculate not estimate, so written exactly like that it comes to...

651.6 - 8.7942 (do the division first unless there are brackets somewhere) which is 642.81 (2dp)

(Get rid of the ½)

2S = xd²

2S / x = d²

d = [SQUARE ROOT](2S / x)

I'm not going to give answers as I'm not gonna do your homework for you as it aint gonna help you at all. If you don't understand as your teacher or someone in your class who does to show you.

Quadratic equation get used for this one I think...

seems straight forward, multiply out the braket and move the things with an x before it to one side and the constants to the other side and work out what values of x solve it.

All the others require too much thought and its been years since I did any of this.

(X - 3)(X + 1) = 0 (start by factorising)

Either X - 3 = 0 OR X + 1 = 0

X = 3 OR X = -1

Right, here I think you are supposed to use estimates. If I am wrong then sorry but I will use estimates anyway :P. If not correct me and I will try and do it again.

650 - 4 / 7 - 8²

650 - 4 / 7 - 64

650 - 4 / - 57

650 - 4 / - 60 (estimation still)

650 - 0.666

= 649.3

> 10 b) Using indices, write 392 as a product of its prime factors

7³ + 7²

> 12 a) solve the equation “6(x + 2) = 2x – 6

(Multiply out the bracket first)

6x + 12 = 2x - 6

6x - 2x + 12 = -6

4x = -6 - 12

4x = -18

X = -4.5

> 12 c) Make “d” the subject of the formula

> S = ½ xd²

(Get rid of the ½)

2S = xd²

2S / x = d²

d = √(2S / x)

Hope this helps mate. If you need to ask any more help, just email me or chat on MSN! :)

Can't be bothered to do the others but this one dosn't need much thought.

Just put everything on the other side.
ie to start. To get the half on the other side you would divide each side by a half (same as multiplying by 2)
So you get

2S = xd(squared)

then divide each side by x and square root both sides.

I hate to say this, but why the heck would anyone need to know any of that rubbish. Algebra is the most pointless thing on the planet, apart from Busted of course.
