With no memories the next day of being out late

One man put down a pound coin, and could therfore have wanted something that cost less than one pound.

The other put down change totalling exactlly one pound, proving that what he wanted cost exactly one pound.

I think I have heard something similar before.

Is it something to do with the fact that guinness is not bitter, it's stout, where as Worthingtons is bitter?

I dunno how it would work, but anyways . .
