No problem with having your own opinion.
Anyway, it all really depends on what type of games you like as all 3 consoles have different types, so its really down to your past experiences. If you owned either a Nintendo are Sony machine and liked them then your possible better off staying with them as they have the games for you. However if these did not really impress you all that much then you may find that the X-box is the machine for you.
All though the specs for each are different, they are not different enough to make a big difference in the performance of the machine, so dont be worried about that.
just my opinion. im not going to go into detail as it will turn this into one of those anyoing consol war posts.
So in order of best to worse this is how I'd advice you to get one of the next-gen console:
1. Ps2 - because its out now and already has a few killer games already out in the UK.
2. Xbox - It may be a bit far away but also the games on it are impressive with cut out loading times due to developers using the HDD plus most games are network compatible like Halo using gamespy network, the official network is still being worked on.
3. Gamecube - Well Resi 4 is exclusive on it as well as some old favourites like Mario and maybe Pokemon.
So by my advice if you can only afford one console get the PS2, if you can afford two then get the Ps2 and the xbox ans get the Gc if you can afford all three.
The reason for this is that the Gc doesnt very many games out even at launch in UK, though Nintendo havent confirmed what gems are out at launch and it isnt backward compatible with N64 games. Though an import Gc would be the best as there are some good games in Japan and USA but dont expect the same treatment in Europe.
As for console life, well there is speculation of PS3 being released in 2003.
The only thing you have to decide on is the games. Look at each consoles games that are out now and future games. If you want more games on the PS2 than get that. If you want more GC games get that.

Its not buying the console that costs money, its the games to play on it.
