The only downside to it, and it's not even that much of a pain, is the one-save-per-level chance which can lead to ages and ages of gameplay only to be stopped with 1 bullet.
If you want to save whenever you want to instead of just the once?
Left Shift + numberpad minus key
Then type savegame
Voila, instant save.
Hurrah.
It can be so satisfying to send team members forwards, just to send a few stray bullets/rockets chasing after them.
Watch the AI soliders run.

I just shoot them and then go mental, shooting my entire squad before turning it off in a huff and smoking angrily
I often end up executing my own guys if they have a weapon I quite fancy using/they are using crapply.
Did the tank battle, easy-peasy.
Then had to rescue hostages and run away like big soldier girls.
Now trying to attack a base, except Soldier 4 doesn't understand that his RPG should be used on BMPs.
"4 target BMP" says me
"Roger" says 4
BMP trundling about shooting everyone
"4 target BMP" says me
"Roger" says 4, still laying down and staring at it.
"4 target BMP" says me
"Roger" says paralysed 4
"Damn, 4 is down" says me
"Cease fire" says someone else
"Damn, 2 is down" says me
"Cease fire" says someone else
"Damn, 3 is down. Damn 5 is down, damn 6 is down" says me
They all got shot by an irate Victor Trotska, fed up of watching his spakky troops stare stupidly at BMPs rolling over him
Works a treat.
Got the gold edition off ebay for a tenner. Played through the first few missions and have enjoyed it actually.
Need more time though!
