That's the whole point!
It's a real world, what were you expecting? To be led by the nose through several 'seen it all before' levels on yet another FPS that adds absolutely nothing to anything?
And how exactly are the visor effects gimmicky? They're an integral part of the game!

In my opinion, the controls are a bit lame, especially the strafing and looking around (which both use the control stick and a shoulder button). But you probably get used to them eventually.
Combat is lame, because of the lock on system. Too easy with one enemy on screen, can't control it adequately with more than two.
Plus there are about a million very minor areas that you can only go to once you've got certain power-ups, which demands a whole lot of back-tracking, and trying to remember where stuff is (especially hard when you get disinterested in the game generally). Plus there are a few too many bits where you can't be sure whether you need to backtrack for *miles* or try in vain to do something which is beyond your capabilities with the items you've gathered so far.
And the visor effects everyone lusts over, they look quite cheap and pretty gimmicky.
Other than that I can't fault the game :^)
