From what only appears to be a gaming rut of hell... Nintendo are sliding... fast.

The console has only been out a year but failing to reach tragets by just under 50% was a drastic disaster for Nintendo. GBA selling millions or not Nintendo will not keep a dead weight going as long as Microsoft will. Sales for Nintendo's Gamecube are at the stage where they ARE indeed making money... but recent reports show this is only a temporay thing.

Dixons and Argos have removed their Gamecube stock. Argos are only willing to stock under 50% of their normal Gamecube shipments but originally planned to cut the console all together. The GAME group have also scaled down its Gamecube size and so has Blockbuster/Choices who are removing Gamecube stock all together from certain stores. Despite shocking concerns it doesn't appear all TOO bad, Nintendo stock is still booming in certain retailers with Special Reserve indicating that they are enjoying some success with Nintendo's console. Also independant retailers across britain are enjoying some success.

Nevertheless it all looked grim but Nintendo have to face another problem... the 3rd parties. Whereas the N64 began with little 3rd party support and that grew, it is the opposite for the Cube. Codemasters already withdrew from Nintendo support and the success of Zelda was to define Infogrammes support. Capcom are trying to shift attention slowly back to Sony and SEGA's new plan includes a dramatic recline in Nintendo support.

In an attempt to counter-act the problem Nintendo are to produce a royalty scheme. Nintendo will also stop the high prices 3rd parties are forced to spend. EA, the biggest company that threatened to leave Nintendo, the company that broke SEGA, were the last straw for Nintendo and their 'wait and see' attitude. EA are vital to Nintendo's success and So Nintendo revealed that a deal broke last month, Nintendo offered Electronic Arts a fresh royalty break of the cost of game production, plus $1 US, resulting in the slew of titles announced by Electronic Arts during March.

A similar deal (although not AS great) is being done to all 3rd parties. Nintendo have their backs to the wall, the games that saved them during the N64 are NOT doing it this time. Zelda and Mario unsuprisingly hit the number one spot but for a mere week, Mario's success was similar to Pikmin's in Japan and this was a devestating blow. In an attempt to push Zelda Nintendo announced a bonus disc. It took record pre-orders but then, as it with Mario, the game dropped!

Metroid Prime did moderate success again and just as Nintendo had hoped... great but not world smashing. Nintendo realize that it is the other developers that can unleash a smash hit and so losing them would be killer.

It is the new titles that Nintendo are developing that look to save the company in the long run. Pikmin did VERY well and as the game gets a sequel, and another... the game will become bigger. Metroid Prime is also looking like a firm favourite for the west. Animal Crossing is also set to get bigger.

But these games will take time to reach critical success... the third parties and the dwindeling success of their ancient franchises Zelda and Mario are all Nintendo have left to stay alive.

Maybe it is time Pokemon returned to the home consoles... and then we may have that temporary revival that is so vital.

Dringo.

While that would be nice, Capcom seem to be concentrating on the 'Cube more than any console at the moment - Nintendo need to focus on companies such as Konami and Take 2 who can produce more adult orientated games that shift consoles. As for Capcom, they just need to secure the games announced as exclusives.

Yes, and oh how i enjoyed it!

When He's on the computer, i'm on the Cube, and visa versa. (Most of the time).

It does all seem very different to what we experiences in the days of the SNES doesn't it. What Nintendo need is similar support to what the GBA gets. They want Konami bringing the likes of the Castlevania series, Goeman and Contra (maybe as Probotector for here as in my opinion the robots were better than the blokes). Some more support from Capcom would be good along with more games from Squaresoft.
I think Rare have left a big gap too - I think in the long run Nintendo needed them to stay.

Nintendo are bringing some excellent games out, but I think some of the other long running titles need to make an appearance too. As far as Pokemon goes, another Stadium game would be great, but I think Nintendo need to put more effort into it - if they do then it could well become a major must have title. With the extra power of the GC, I think the stadium battles could look a lot more impressive now with not only different arenas such as maybe a water one for instance, but much more in the way of character animations. Instead of just standing on the spot and then doing a brief animation which then switches to the opponent being hit, they could actually show the 2 Pokemon colliding and moving about, etc.
Plus theres plenty of other things that could be included to make it a lot more than just a better looking way of battling the Pokemon you've caught. If Nintendo give this one a lot of attention, it could be a real winner - just like the handheld games.

I'm looking at F-Zero and so far I'm practically dribbling over myself everytime I see new stuff about it. ;-)) Mmmmmmmmmmmm, F-Zero ::drool::

My thoughts exactly Mess, at the end of the day Nintendos yearly income make no difference to so I don't care.

I'm fed up with all the negativity towards Gamecube and Nintendo's approach to the console market. As long as I can keep playing the games I want to then I'm happy.

Funny you should mention that, as my brother's playing the horribly underrated and quite excellent Jedi Knight II at the moment.

I see your point though. I play my GameCube quite a bit, but I also enjoy going on the interenet too. It's about an equal share of time I devote to each.

Personally I don't really care about the state Nintendo's in or how things are going. I bought a GameCube to have quality games and enjoy myself playing them, not to worry myself with petty politics concerning billion-dollar deals that I, a puny European gamer, have absolutely no control over. I realise that some of you guys feel really strongly about this but surely if you're arguing on here all the time about the state of Nintendo then your GameCube is sitting there, not being played?

Maybe that's why Nintendo are losing their place in the market, because all their fans aren't buying the games and instead are chatting on the internet about Nintendo's financial position. Hmmmm, interesting thought.

In theory, Rare would have been nice to have - big franchises, good reputation, etc. But taking into consideration recent issues (the split, disappointing SFA, acquisition of better developers) I think the price that Microsoft payed was more than enough.

You have a sadistic view of fun then.

Take Barrell from A to B, get gay dinosaur to dig up gold bars, get bored of crap gameplay, realise how shoddy and repetetive the game really is, take back to shop because the game manages drain every ounce of energy out of your body and you loose the will to play this cesspile of a sh*tfest.
