4 people had a possible chance of winning the title. McRae, Burns, Makinen and Sainz. Sainz had literally no chance. He withdrew in the end because he slid into some spectators.
Makinen and McRae retired so all Burns had to do was finish 4th or higher. It shows that anyone can win the World Championship because Burns only won 1 of the 14 rounds.

Fantastic! I didn't know as the BBC's coverage of this fantastic event was absolutely dire! I think they only had about 1 half hour programmes on the whole weekend!
Anyway, I had heard that McRae and the other challneger (Sainz wasn' it?) both crashed out on day one, so it wasn't amazingly difficult for him to win...
