Gar, this is doing my head in. How can the universe be infinite? It's got to end somewhere...

Think of it like this - infinity isn't constant, it is relative. Infinaty is a concept, not a number, so is interfreted by each individual dealing with it in comparison to their unique knowledge. If I'm a beggar on the street £100 is a lot of money. If I'm Bill Gates we'd need to be taking hundereds of thousands before I'll call it a lot of money.

For our purposes, the universe is infinate. With current knowledge and space exploration there is no way we could cover all the the space currently charted. For all intensive purposes this is then infinate. One day we'll become able to travel and explore space freely and then it may take more for us to say the universe is infinate.

In any case, the constantly expanding thing already mentioned is correct (to all currently scientific knowledge - Earth is flat etc). This rasies an interesting probelem, it means the universe can't be infinate at any one point in time. If it is expanding it must have boundaries. If it has boundaries you must be able to measure it. Anything you can measure isn't infinate by definition. However, this is only a theoretical "problem".

ive heard that expanding one before. its almost impossible to disprove but i dont think its true. or if it is then it cant be happening quickly, but then again we caqnt measure it. DAMN. a quote i made up which i thought i might throw into this "infinity is a possibility, not a certainty". quite obvious. but it sounds good.

The Universe is constantly expanding. The galaxies are becoming further and further apart from each other. There are no boundaries to stop it from expanding.

What I was struggling with, is that when I think of infinity, I think of a mass with a limit, but then you go beyond that limit, over and over etc.

Hard to explain...

Just think of the universe as a massive circle...

Whatever way you go you'll just go around in a massive circle, you can't break out of it as there are no boundaries.

Makes infinity easier.
