I bought a MAXX P4 1.7GHz from you in June this year, and have just upgraded to Windows XP Home edition.

Everything works fine, except for my modem, which is the one supplied with the machine.

I've been looking for some XP drivers, but I'm unsure of the modem's brand.

Under Windows ME it installed as a Rockwell HSF SoftK56flex (or something similar to that) and worked fine. Under XP however, it is detected as a 'Best Data Data Fax Modem', and although XP says that it is working correctly, I cannot dial out; the modem does seem to answer okay, though.

Could you please...

(a) point me in the direction of suitable XP drivers on the web, or

(b) Give me some idea as to which modems you sell which do operate under Windows XP.

Many thanks.

XP just looks altogether too friendly for me and it's not amazingly quick (as if any Microsoft OS is). Win2K seemed very good when I use it at the City School over the road. I'd defintely use it as an alternate to 98 and I'd probably pay extra to have 2K instead of XP.

Wookiee, check the nvidia site, their drivers work very well with any GF3, and they've supported XP for a while now.

http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=windows2000

Uses the same driver for XP and 2000, but often gives much better performance than those that the manufacturers supply.

I would, but my card is a Guillemot/Hercules 3D Prophet III, and their site currently has no XP-specific drivers available for download.

I've e-mailed their support people, but am waiting for a reply.

Yeah admittantly most of the people that had the problems where hardcore gamers. They either had problems mentioned previously or had really low fps. Apparently micro$oft have merged the windows NT kernel and the windows 98 kernal to get XPs unfortunaly this seems to mean that you have to sacrifice some fps from the windows 98 side(frames per second) for some reliablity (windows NT)

Yes, but presumably it's installing generic drivers for each of them...network card, sound (to a degree), fine, but I'd never use any video drivers with my GeForce3 other than the nVidia Detonators.

Staggering performance increase, and they're needed to get the most out of the card...upgrade regularly, sticking with my 21.81s at the moment, at least until Technogarb hack some 21.83s. I'd still far rather windows worked like debian, lettign you grab packages off a central server instead of taking up hundreds of megabytes for driver files that you'll likely never need.

SR have now provided me with a ZIP file with the necesasry drivers.

I know there are compatability issues with some older hardware, but so far I am seriously impressed with XP - and I don't usually like Microsoft!

After installing, my GeForce3 card, sound card, network card, cable modem, videocapture card and printer all worked perfectly, without the installation of any extra drivers.

I had to get some XP drivers for my Epson scanner (no problem finding them on the Epson site) and the modem was the only 'major' problem.

If you have a recent PC, I'd recommend XP in a second.

Though I haven't tried any games yet, but people I know have, and have no problems.

I know so many people that have had problems with XP problems include ,freezing ,modem not being detected, Printer not working and sound cards making loads of weird noises. And they have tried proper XP drivers but most of them have not had any luck. I think that buying new hardware may be a rash desicion unless you can get a really cheap modem that is definatly supported by XP. Most of the people that I know that have had problems with xp have uninstalled it and gone back to windows 98se or ME. Simply because everything works on 98!

I am sure that windows xp will become more accepted when there is more support for it. (this was the case with windows 2000) But at the moment as it is new incompatibility is putting a lot of people off. :(

Then again if you have just brought a new pc with xp on it then it probably works fine.

It's not just this one though... I borrowed my mum's Diamond SupraMax USB modem, and that doesn't work under XP either... and that's confirmed by Diamond on their website!

Thing is, none of the modems on the SR site say 'compatible with Windows XP'.

They obviously have it working, though, because the latest catalogue says that the MAXX PC's are now shipped with XP Home Edition installed. Unless it's a different modem, of course.

Either way, I'd like to know, cos I can't update my website until I get it sorted!!!

This is possibly the worst modem available. I have one, feel my pain. Basically, it's not much more than a port and the whole "modem" bit is done by software, obviously not written for WinXP. I suggest you try and find some from Rockwell/Conexantsoft's website who *should* have some WinXP drivers by now. Either that or get a new modem which is highly recommended by me.

In my experience Rockwell are terrible with their drivers. They still haven't got round to releasing (nay, starting on) Linux drivers yet.
