It's hard not to get drawn into the recent barage of 'vote for me' and 'vote for him' posts cluttering the chat forum, and spilling into the others, but have you ever asked why it's so important?

I expect almost all of us will admit to deciding what topics to read based on the title, does this ever extend to the author? I know i'd have to say yes, but to a much lesser extent. If you're looking for attention, there are better ways.

Do we show more respect to the notables? Not just in reading their views, as above, but also in how we may treat them, how much we value their input to the site.
Compared to the average poster, clearly the notables enjoy a lot more of this respect, but newbies aside, do you really base this on the colour of a poster's name (don't worry, i won't take the obvious analogy!), or simply on your experience of their previous posts?

I know that there are certain regulars who i view in the same kind of way as the notables. Why? Because they do always post well, and so i always take time to consider what they have to say.

What else is there then? What can be so great about being a notable?
I think it can only amount to the same as a big, exclusive copularity pontest. Everyone shows their opinion of other members, and for those who do well, you get to be liked, you get to be a winner, and you get the rest of the forum to acknowledge that they think you're worth something, that you're special.

Okay, nothing wrong with that. It's nice to have other people say nice things about you. It's nice to be acknowledged. Don't we all love that, be it in response to our topics, a gad, or the notable vote.

But is it really this important?

Why do we seem to need the acknowledgement of others so badly to devote so much energy to it? Is it healthy that the wide acceptance of our contribution, in the form of the decision to grant on us a special status and colour, is really that desperately important? Or can we be satisfied with our own self image?

I don't know about you guys, but i don't steal. I not treat people badly, not unless they're doing something to me first. I don't wait in dark alleys to mug pensioners, stealing their pension and the keys to their cars, go joyriding recklessly through housing estates where kids are playing in the streets, and swereve to hit family pets and wild animals on the road. Often. Thus, yellow letters aren't really that important to me.

But it'd look so pretty...

The notable is a sign of being 'Note able' you've been noticed for something that is worth noticing and others respect you for that. You are a good writer with valid opinions and more then likely will have won more then most people with your name up on the winners list.

Whilst reading this please excuse Sniper from anything mentioned.

Thank You.

I think we were all voted in, except for Sheepy & pb, who were let in just because they got lots of votes, and many had them in mind.

Originally there were 5, and they were elected in a thread in which you had to post 5 people you thought should be notables, the first 5 people to reach X (with X representing a number of votes) became notables. I'd call that I vote. Of sorts.

You were just going through one of those stages where you're completely wrapped up in something else FM, as you do. And came back to notice your name had changed colour, if I remember rightly... ;-)

You can dig all you like, but you won't find something that's not there! No, not even one by Dan_uk. :-)

Anyway, put it this way, Ant, Grix, Yourself, Meka, Sniper etc...

You were all notable LONG before you got that Golden name.
Infact, the whole Notable thing was created to make bigger characters like you lot stick out.

People seem to think that you have to get votes in order to be a notable, but they don't seem to realise that you have to be a notable, if you're going to get votes.

I disagree, look at Sniper.

Shall I just dig up one of your old ones for you? :)

I agree with Mr Duck.

It's not Notability that earns you respect, it's respect that earns you notability.

That's why I'm never going to do an election campaign of any sort.

And of course the pay is good and the 5 free games a month for a console of our choice goes down rather well.

An interesting fact, of course, is that only two notables have ever actually been voted in before, (er-no and Meka_Dragon) the rest of us were picked by SR without any voting for 'our contribution to the Future of Gaming forum' when the notable thing first started.

My contribution was the white background. Nice, isn't it?
