From ThisIsLondon:

The American Airlines Airbus that crashed into New York could have suffered an unprecedented disaster when BOTH its engines fell off, it is being suggested today.

American air safety sources say both engines from Flight 587's Airbus A300 appear to have broken away from the aircraft before it crashed into the New York suburb of Rockaway moments after take-off from JFK.
It also appears the vertical tail section came off the aircraft, raising the possibility of a mechanical and maintenance failure of dramatic proportions.

One official told the Washington Post: "We're utterly baffled. This is not even within statistical calibrations."

The proponents of the theory that both engines came off support their argument by pointing to repeated warnings that the Airbus's A300 CF6 power unit is suspect. While the plane is designed to be flown on one engine in case of an accident, the possibility of an aircraft losing both is fantastically remote. If it proved true in this case, it would represent an aviation safety scandal as devastating in its way as a new terrorist attack.

Some aviation experts remain highly cautious about today's report, and say that American air safety sources are sometimes too ready to jump to conclusions on slender evidence. "I am not prepared to discuss any idea of this kind until we have more hard evidence," said a respected aviation expert today. But if mechanical failure is proved, there is the prospect of every aircraft equipped with the same CF6 engines being grounded worldwide. Among these is President George W Bush's Air Force One Boeing 747.

Nine crew and 251 passengers - including five infants sitting on their parents' laps - were killed as the plane ploughed into homes on the ground.

Deputy Police Commissioner Joseph Dunne said 265 bodies had been recovered, but could not yet provide details on how many people might have been killed on the ground. He said six to nine people in the neighbourhood were missing, remarkably low given Rockaway is a residential district and many families were at home during what was a public holiday.

If both engines did shear off it may explain the conflicting accounts of witnesses on the ground, who described both left and right engines plunging to the ground.

The right-hand engine, No 2, was the older of the pair, having flown 9,788 hours since its last overhaul and was shortly due for its 10,000 hour service, compared with the 694 hours flown by No 1, on the left.

The CF6 has suffered a series of dramatic failures in recent years and air safety officials had already told the industry to carry out an urgent assessment of its dangers.

The US Federal Aviation Administration warned just last month that its own study of these engines indicated a need for tougher inspections of possibly worn parts. The FAA, which set a 60-day period for industry feedback that was to end on 4 December, called the current risk an "unsafe condition" that could damage a plane.

Just heard on the news on my lunch, that they have recovered the black box voice recorder from the plane.

They've listened to the conversation in the cockpit and apparently "there are no signs of abnormal activity" or some such phrase like that.

Looks like it was just an unfortunate accident.

Oh my God! Think of all those other plane crashes there have

I'll bet the Paddington railcrash was a terrorist operation too.

All those pile-ups on the M5 in dangerous conditions -

Damn them. Lets nuke them all. Is'n't that a bit harsh venombyte, besides were not as evil as those damn terrorists. So bush wouldn't use nukes, not unless it was our last very last option, even then he would still be reluctant to use them but if the worst came to the worst he just MIGHT be tempted to.

Where's the Simpsons... Boo hoo!

I know it's a tragic accident but it is probably just an accident we knew for sure about the September 11th attacks but this could just be a coincidence.

Wise words Tony.

Nobody says you have to be serious, or even care about the crash today, I'm just concerned that someone may read this who has lost someone, and it doesn't sit right with me that a comment I make could offend or upset someone at a time like that.

We're all good people here, nobody is that insensitive intentionally.
Or at least I hope not.
