I have just ordered 2 Region 1 DVD's. I have my PS2 which I am getting a region changer for and I have my 16x Pionner DVD drive for my PC. I use Power DVD and have used it too watch PSW free DVD's. It automatically set the region to 0. Will the reion 1 DVD's work on this region as its a free region. Also do on my DVD drive I have 5 DVD region changes left. I havent set up a region yet or changed it. Using Power DVD gets passed the DVD drive region doesnt it?

RCE has been a bit of a failure - it's pretty easy to get around. Considering the patches to make your Power DVD multi-region are written by amature's, someone will have worked out an RCE hack by this stage.

If you want to check which disks are RCE quickly and easily, go to www.play.com. Final Fantasy is RCE - though I really wouldn't worry about it. If the patch you have already doesn't work (and it probably will), try another one. You really shouldn't have too much hassle.

I have a NTSC compatable TV. I am getting the new action Replay 2 card for the PS2 which includes region changer for the PS2. Also going to get a RGB scart cable. Until then I can use my PC which can be changed as many times to any region as I use Power DVD and have the crack for it. Hopefully Final Fantasy Spirits within isnt a RCE disk as I am not 100% sure if PC's would run it ok or whether the PS2 would also do it.

Thought just struck me, unlikely to matter, but you've checked NTSC compatibalities, haven't you? Wouldn't worry about it, highly, highly unlikely to be a problem.

Bit late - but here's the region section from my all conquering Beginners guide to DVD. Wrote it for a friend's web-site about 18 months ago. As he never got round to actually making the site (as far as I know at least) I may as well let you see this wee bit :)

So, can I buy those lovely cheap disks from the States?

Yes and no.

What?

Well, unlike video, all DVDs are essentially the same standard and any DVD can play on any DVD player. However, when the big Hollywood film distributors heard that DVD would be a universal standard (the way the film is encoded and compressed is called MPEG-2) they all got a bit worried as it might mess up their release schedules. Therefore the DVD Forum introduced the region system. There are eight regions for both the software and the hardware so that disks from, for example, Region Two will only play on a Region Two player. The Regions are divided as follows; R1 ñ USA and Canada, R2 ñ Europe and Japan, R3 ñ other South-East Asian countries, but not China, R4 ñ Latin American, New Zealand and Australia, R5 ñ African and Eastern Europe, but not Russia, R6 ñ China, R7 ñ for future use, and R8 ñ airline movies. There are also a few Region 0 disks that can be played on any player.

Right, so, how can I get those Region 1 disks to work on my player?

Chances are you bought your player here in the UK and therefore it is Region 2. As most DVD player manufacturers didnít want the region system to be introduced they make getting around the region lockouts pretty easy. Your player can be made Region 0 and therefore will play any disk. This can sometimes be done by pressing a series of commands on the playerís remote control, like entering a ëcheatí into a computer game. Believe it or not, you can also get a few players that are Region 0 straight out of the box and can play any disks straight away. Now, if you stroll into your local branch of Dixons they wonít tell you which players either of these things can be done to ñ in fact they will probably try and tell you it is illegal to ëtamperí with your play in such a method. Get yourself a few DVD magazines and check out the player reviews. These will tell you which players can be easily made Region 0. The problem with Region 0 is that the film producers caught onto this trick and made some of their disks incompatible with this region (however this only effect a few titles). Therefore making your system multi-region is more desirable. Here the player thinks it is an R1 player, and an R2 player, and an R3 player and so on. Again, you can enter a remote control hack to make some players to do this and a few will be like this out of the box. However, some companies werenít so lenient as they have a vested interest in keeping the region system, for example Sony own Columbia Tri-Star and hence like the current system. Professionals can ëchipí your player - open it up and install a new ROM chip in the player to make it multi region. This obviously makes your manufacturerís warranty invalid, but the better outfits will provide you with a warranty of their own. Getting your player chipped is perfectly legal and will probably cost you about £30, depending on what player you have.

Clearly it was written before the introduction of RCE - but it isn't that effective and others have guided you through it below, so it seems.

I have set my PowerDVD to region 1. I have got the region changer for PowerDVD so I can change the region whenever I need. My DVD is still set to no region and I still have 5 changes that I can make. Looks like I will be able to change regions as many times as I need to with this crack and PowerDVD. Just hope now that the 2 DVD's work.

My PowerDVD software on my PC is set to region 0. I have a piece of software that changes the region for PowerDVD. But region 0 is free so region 1 discs should play on region 0 fine. The 2 DVD's iam getting are Tomb Raider (region 1) and Final Fantasy Spirts Within (region 1). Final Fantasy could have RCE on it so would a PC be able to get past this? As setting PowerDVD to region 0 will mean its region free or I could set it to region 1 and that should work.

When I was using PowerDVD for the PSW DVD's I then used it for F12001(the free DVD with the PS2 version of F12001)This loaded but did lockup, I think the disc is region 2.

See... I can getting a multi-region DVD is no problem...

(through a reputable dealer)

Its just I dont want to buy it, only to discover that it wont play RCE DVDs...

If multi-region means it plays RCE (and that RCE IS the regional encoding system they use) ... then thats cool for cats..

But if multi-region refers to a different regional-encoding system than RCE, then I'll be royally miffed :)

Are these multi-region versions of these machines?

This is where I'm confuse... does multi-region mean it will play RCE DVD's ... or is RCE a new form of region coding?

(Thanks for the help by the way)
