First part of that sentence, very true indeed, sceptical in most part for the rest.

But I've a bit of advice for PS2 potential buyer's.
The console is a must buy at the moment, considering what you get: PS, PS2 and DVD Player, not bad at all.

As for the games?, well that's the downer, they do suck mostly, for the moment anyway, I own the following and played most releases, but do remember- it is personal preference and 'MY opinion' as a Multi Format Gamer.

They are:

Gran Turismo 3: Great at first, great graphics 'only' in parts. Why oh Why could the graphics not have the frame rate and smoothness of the replays? mmm?
And Monotonous! This game is it!

SSX: Fabulous! Probably the only game I play the most on my PS2. The Graphics are great yes, but weren't we promised of more from the PS2?
From what Iv'e played ( H-o-u-r-s) the Dreamcast would shift this baby along with ease with no problem and that's the thing, It doesn't push the console enough in visuals, the gameplay more than make's up for it though.

Resident Evil Code Veronica X: Same as Dreamcast Version, but with a boost in gameplay. But one thing I have to ask, why did they make the visuals more murkier? I preferred the crisp look of the DC Original!

StarWars Starfighter: Boy was this game a let-down for me, really!
I concider myself a Starwars Fanatic and this game dissapoints in all departments.
This game is Boring!
Even the dysmal N64 Shadow's of the Empire is better.
Graphics tend to lose their visual quality too when the action heats up, or when more than one visual hits the screen, framerate gets jerky etc. Just play the game in combat sequences to see what I mean.
And what happened to the Textures we are so used to on the ships in the films? Flat dreary polygon's spoil the fun.
It has the lighting effect's, which are great, but put this up against Gamecube's Rogue Leader to see what a real console would do with the franchise.

And what have I got to look forward to in the future for PS2?
Well we have Devil may cry which looks promising, gameplay ozzing in quality (But with 'could look better graphics').

GTA 3 again one for the gameplay, visuals could have been better.

Final Fantasy 10: Now this is one that lives up to the PS2 name. Fantastic.

Metal Gear Solid 2: Probably the one that will put other PS2 Developer's to shame and teach them how to do good visuals on the system.

But generally, I know, I have a downbeat attitude for the PS2's games, But that's 'My opinion' I own a Dreamcast with 30 'something' game's for it; and with that console I've seen better looking game's and played better games for it than what I have played or seen for PS2.

And seeing games for Gamecube with tremendous visuals opens your eye's too. And I suppose that doesn't help when you look at PS2 Game's.
Anyway, again It's my opinion, don't get worked up about it or let it put you off the PS2, for those that haven't got it, go and get it, put the graphics behind you. It mightn't be all there for Gamecube type quality but hey, you get two console's in one, a DVD and Metal Gear Solid 2 that you'll not see on Gamecube. mmmm, can't wait!

Cheers Wolfhound. I'm a potential buyer for the PS2, and may get the SR GT3 Fire Pack. I would only have enough money left for one game and from what I've heard - SSX is the game to get, and you've confirmed it!

Oh, I don't believe the PS2 is perfect...

I suppose the reason why I don't like it so much is because it isn't capable of offering what the Gamecube can...

The Gamecube is still my favourite... plus I've never played a Resident Evil game, and the fact that they're all coming out on Gamecube means I can start from the bottom and work my way up...

I can just see more magic in the Gamecube games... I mean, Making your animals grom in DKR by feeding them, and changing animals mid-race... playing Mario again and Zelda with a whole new storyline... what the GC has to offer is little short of perfect in my view, but as you say... there are some PS2 games, and even PSX titles that I just won't miss... I was never a big fan of Playstation... they didn't seem to care about gameplay... and developers were just after the money... only a few big companies cared...

But that seems to have all changed, somehow...

Still... Roll On Gamecube... :D

Game you've opened a flood gate for PS owners to give so called comments about you liking the PS2 but I've only got one thing to say.

The PS2 is by no means perfect but it offers some truly terrific games with excellent graphics, I see nothing but improvement in the future and looking at the second generation PS2 titles they're looking better than ever. Also with an enhanced PS1 thrown in too you get the chance to play all the PS1 games that you might have missed over the "N64 years"

I'm thrilled about the resi games coming to the gamecube because it makes the purchase worth while and I can experience what Nintendo have planned for their next-gen console which looks very promising :-)

we get the best of both worlds ;-)

The music seems pretty good too... I've downloaded the TGS Trailer and the scores are amazing! Especially the part where he jumps after the big monster thingy. The storyline seems quite epic as well... I don't know much about the first one... hopefully i'll be able to get it before MGS2 comes out, which shouldn't be a problem...

A question for those of you with the demo:

Are all the features of the real game included in the video...? I just wondered, you know... as you do...

I haven't played FF 7 - which loads of people keep going on about... Bonus keeps squealing about some Aeris death scene... I don't quite know what he's on about, but it must be worth a look.

LOL!

I've just downloaded an MGS2 vid from IGN... Snake punches and kicks a locker, it falls on him, and he gets knocked out!

I was laughing like mad! I didn't realise the realism and detail that went into MGS2... the cardboard box bullet holes, the guards following trails of blood... even down to throwing empty gun clips....

This game is definitely top of my PLAYSTATION 2 wish list... (SFA Rules... :D)...

What I think is so good about the PS2 is the fact that the blockbuster by me has about 2 copies, or more of each game... they have a massive wall full of PS2 games for rent... it's only about £3 for 5 nights... not bad at all!

I'm quite reassured now, that buying a PlayStation 2 will benefit me enough... there are a few choice games I want, most of my friends (those that buy a console) will get one, you can rent games... and you can get it chipped... amongst other things...

I don't know if I want all of these AAA games that your all raving on about, but MGS2, Pro Evolution, Smackdown 3 and GTA3 are the ones i'll probably get.... although i'm still a bit weary of GTA3...

Couple of points to remember...

Graphics aren't always going to be the absolute best a machine can produce in every game, as each game has it's own style. MGS2 is about as good as it can be, while maintaining the style of the original. While it is much improved in the visual stakes, it is still instantly recognisable as an MGS game. As daft as it may sound, there can be a downside to improving things *too* much; you can alienate and existing audience and lose sales.

There are also games which don't even attempt to get the best graphics out of the machines - the new Zelda on the 'cube shocked me when I first saw it, and Parappa 2 on PS2 is equally as strange.

GTA3 could also be better, but too relistic (i.e. graphics as good as GT3 throughout, including people) and it is likely that they would have been unable to release the game at all.

What needs to be remembered is that while each machine *can* produce astounding graphics, that will not be required or even necessary for each and every game.

Headhunter does look very good, and is also coming out for PS2 and Xbox - well worth keeping an eye on!

That's slightly exagerating REF, I have the trial MGS2 disk, downloaded the latest video's and the graphics are brilliant yes, but along side most of the Gamecube game's it doesn't compare. But that's to be expected, the GC is a box of visuals supreme to any other console.
I have to say also, go and take a look at 'Headhunter' for the Dreamcast. It comes pretty close to MGS2, too close in fact.

Still want a PS2, and GTA3 is top of my wish list at the moment...

But do I want to pay £200 for it? Hell no. I don't really want to pay £200 for a Gamecube, but I can and will... my job money is beginning to run dry.

Still, spend a lot of time on ebay... waiting...
