The sad day has come where i've reaslised that I can't get away with buying my family cards for christmas while getting a N64 or Dreamcast with 4 games in return...

This year, I plan to buy them a DVD Player... I'm not thick... but when it comes to DVD players I have little experience... which can be summed up in one sentance: 'Breaking a £500 DVD player in COMET and running out of the store'

Now then... I would go for a decent brand - say a Nintendo endorsed one like Panasonic :D, But It did occur to me that that 'thing' you call a Playstation 2 can play DVD's as well... Now... i'm not going soft, I still think SONY are complete idiots...

However, my brothers, who don't have the same steel Nintendo backbone I do, feel that they'd like to be able to play a decent football game on a console and think I should get a PlayStation 2. I was opposed to the whole idea... still am, but I don't buy presents for me... and I want them to be happy...

Of course I won't touch the thing... and i'll definitely use a thrid-party remote control.... :D

What I want to know is if the DVD Player is any good... Please, give honest opinions... I know it can be multi-region, but I want to know what it's like on performance...

Thank You

Game

haven't read all the feedback but here's mine....

i've had no problems so far.
you need dvd region x to play multi region (18 quidish)
get the official dvd remote which has updated software for your ps2 (needs 2mb space on mem card)
don't worry you only need to get the one mem card (if you get the sr firepack deal then you don't need to get anything extra)......there will still be plenty of space for LOADSA other games.
as you are getting the ps2 now.....it shouldn't have as many problems as the launch machines had.
err....anything else you wanna know??

Bonus: Amn't isn't a word, you twirp!

Rockstar: Thanks! ^_^

The thing is... i'm gaming mad. I'm crap a games... but I still enjoy them... My family are by No means Movie watchers, but loads of my cousins have DVD players and DVD's, so if there is a way I get to play these PS2 'games', as well as my family being able to watch films that are at all better than the VHS copies with regards to picture quality, then i'm all for it...

I've just heard so much *, basically, so I don't want to buy one and then have some SONY idiot on the other end of the phone telling me I should have stuck with my VHS and N64... :D

I'm quite happy to get a PS2 for my brother (and the DVD for my family) But i'd rather convert my brother (:D) and get my family a Decent DVD IF the PS2 one isn't good enough...

Thanks!

The Game, I think I might be able to help you here mate. Both the PS2 and the DVD player have their ups and downs. I have no interest in investing in a PS2, so I decided to get a DVD player (from Special Reserve of course). Lets analyse both the console and the standalone unit.

The PS2 is better from a gamer's point of view, as it boasts an actual games console and a DVD player for the cheap price of £199.99. The price tag is incredibly daunting, for the pure fact that it is also equipped with DVD playing capabilities. A gamer would probably pick this up without hesitation (if he had the money, of course!) From a gamer's point of view, he would walk home a happy puppy.

However, I have heard from many sources that the PS2's playback of the DVD's is not too great and that if a Scart Lead is not used, it will not play correctly. On the other side of the coin, I have also heard that the playback is worthy of a DVD player. If I ever decide to get a PS2, or manage to somehow see one playing a DVD, I shall be able to decide for myself. If I see it in the immidiate future, I shall report back to you without hesitation. A film fanatic may want to focus on the playback of the DVD and prefer to splash out an extra £200 on the PS2 or not at all. If you are crazy about movies and want a truly cinematic experience, get a standalone DVD players.

On a movie-goer's point of view, this may be a little of a mixed bag. It really depends on how much you like games. If you like games as much as movies, then choose the PS2. IF they're out of balance, get them seperatley. Hope I helped The Game.

I would like to point out that the "green-ness" of RGB DVD playback is not a security measure. The fact is that any decent DVD will play through an RGB cable without problem.

The reason for Sony not supporting RGB DVD playback is completely unknown, but Sony still say it's "To stop piracy". Strange how none of Sony's other DVD players have this security system in place.

That said, I will be buying a PS2 next weekend... can someone remind me of the name of the thing that lets you use colour RGB DVD playback? How do you use it- is it a disc or does it load a driver onto your memory card etc.?

Heh... silly inconsistent Playstation people! :D

Make you're mind up...

Most people, most of whom I trust, have said that it's worth having... so I probably will get it while SR still have it in stock...... but I won't buy any first party software! :D

I'll take my Pikachu crossed with a Pit-Bull and if the SR people give me any crap i'll electric-bite-attack them... at least my Pit-achu will..... :D

Game: Nintendo through and through.... :D

I heard new PS2's come with the version 2.10 dvd driver already installed, but you get the driver disc free with the remote anyhow which adds more features.

I've never had any problems with discs stoping half way through, i think it's when people have it vertical :-)

MY honest humble opinion is the PS2 DVD player is...................dependent on the player version.

I bought my PS2 at launch, and the version of the DVD firmware inside sucked, big time, it really was rotten. Lip Synch problems with nearly every disc, and Armageddon and Blade would only play half way through, but Sony saved me eventually.

What they did is released the Official DVD Remote, and bundled the latest version of the firmware with it. This version of the notorious DVD player finally gets it right, no lip synch problems to date, and all my DVDs play from start to finish, plus you get a cool DVD remote control to boot. This version of the DVD player is 2.10E.

So if you are considering buying a PS2 (hehehe :D), make sure you find out exactly what version of the DVD player is on it, if it is below 2.10E, then the Official Remote and a Memory Card are more or less essential.

Bonus << laughing at the ninty who doesn't have a clue. :D

The PS2 DVD player is actually very good. The quality is superb even with the composite cable, and excellent with a anti-green RGB cable. It's best with the offical remote and update disc (sorry). For £200 the PS2 DVD player is a scandelous bargain, and you also get the most powerful console you can buy throw in as well.
