Many reasons my friend! Enough consoles to go around, enough games to go with it, an affordable price, and timing. Many many reasons. The main reason though is games the games that are released can't be any old games REALLY good ones usually popular names are always a good sign.
Ok how did the PS2 launch go?
It went all right, ok not so many consoles but hey at least many of us still got one. Sony's big names used to consist of Tekken, FIFA, Resident Evil (though not anymore), Metal Gear Solid etc... Tekken and FIFA made it to the launch and so Sony got to a good start (personally I despised both the FIFA game and Tekken Tag but then again that might be why I prefer Nintendo).
So those who got one had a nice launch well how about the GBA how would you rate that launch?
Sadly very poor, the GBA looked, felt and was basically a dream but it was very lacking in the games field. We got a remake of a very old Mario game a F zero game and the best one was really a 3rd party game Tony Hawks. I was disappointed in its launch if it was delayed a few months (which to be honest wouldn't of made much difference considering the Gameboy Colorís success) it might of got a launch it deserved with Mario Kart and Bomberman.
Now we both know why we are here you are the Gamecube analyst and specialist (although a very biased one) please tell me how well do you think the Gamecube will fair at launch and why?
Looking at the launch line up you may feel a bit disappointed. Granted unlike the N64 launch it does have a load of 3rd party games including Crazy Taxi (this is going on the American launch) but also unlike the N64 launch something is very missing. Where's Mario? Ok ok Shigsy needs a little longer how about Link? Ok ok he needs even longer for that! Donkey Kong? Not that either erm how about an original Shigsy masterpiece? What he couldn't get that in on time either! (I am referring to Pikmin at the end there).
What the? Are you trying to tell me there isn't a major Nintendo Gamecube launch title! Where is Mario and Link?
Don't fear Mario will probably reach these shores around about Christmas 2002 and Zelda Easter 2003 (I have also missed Perfect Dark which is penciled in for Autumn 2002 wouldn't hold your breath mind) just not at launch!
Ok what did Nintendo bring to the Gamecube launch or will do?
Luigi!
Luigi!?!?!?!?!?!?
Well Shigsy isn't a stupid man he knows he needs to make a game ready for launch so in-between Mario Sunshine and Zelda he squeezed in another project starring Luigi called Luigi's Mansion he Hoovers up ghosts in a platformer none of us expected Shigsy to make it is good fun and all but lacks any real depth and well it was obviously something he had mocked up in his spare time. It is a nice game but I would prefer something different from the Big N or at least make Luigi's Mansion a bit more like those classic Mario games we so love.
Ok Dringo tell me what can Nintendo do? You don't suggest they should wait 9 months for Mario to be ready; they won't make that mistake again!
You are right Luigi's Mansion may of been the best they could do as a substantial Nintendo adventure but I believe there is one other game that should try to make it to the European launch at least that could well be the launch title the Gamecube deserves!
Go no spill the beans are you referring to Pikmin?
I could be but Iím not the game Iím referring to involves Link, Mario, Donkey Kong, Samus, Luigi, Kirby etc... Yep I mean Super Smash Brothers Melee. Not simply because Super Smash Brothers rules but this game features every major Nintendo character ever!!!! There is a small platforming mode, loads of extras and a great multiplayer and combined with the charm of those great Nintendo characters this is the game Nintendo have been making all there lives perfecting it as the gaming world evolves.
Yes i see your point Dringo Super Smash Brothers Melee would be a great title to lead the Gamecube into battle with all the major characters showing up but when is it coming out in America?
Well sadly it isn't the launch date but it is only 2 weeks after on December the 3rd so could Nintendo and the games developers HAL get this game out for the European launch? I damn well hope so!
Here's to the Future

Come on though, Shigsy has publically confirmed it's a kiddies console, what more evidence do you want? Don't guve me that Perfect Dark and Eternal Darkness bullcrap, they're only a handful of games amongst a landslide of others.

Yes but will the x-box succeed?
Does

I HEARED THAT I WILL LET IT GO AS YOU KNOW HOW MUCH OF A CRUSADE I HAVE AGAINST SUCH TALK BUT I'LL SAY THIS I'M 16 I LIKE MARIO, POKEMON, ZELDA AND HAVE NO SHAME! MEANWHILE I WONT GET TELETUBBIES WHICH IS ON ANOTHER CONSOLE.

As we all must have been told over 1,000 times on these forums, the console wars is approaching and before you know it, we'll all be ranting and raving about the latest games. They will be the next step for all of us and no matter what you choose to get, it will dig deep into your pockets and that's before you get your hands on the games.
There is now the PS2 at £200, which if you ask me shows they are worrying about one of the two possible contestants. There is the GameCube; the tiny machine with the tiny price tag is being released at anything between £150 and £200. Whilst the men and ladies at Microsoft, eating in there $50,000 suit with their £1,000 meal decided to be even more greedy and release the X-Box at £300.
Does these prices reflect how each company feels towards the current situation? Ok, look before I start I want it to be clear that although I don't have a Nintendo it doesn't mean I dislike them. Clear on that? Good. As I was saying, Nintendo are loved all around the world. Mario must be one of the most known games on the planet and has more sequels then I can count on both my hands. They are respected and *Cough* so it seems most of there games are aimed at the lower age groups*.
Their track record shows that they are the kings of hand held consoles. Their gameboy smashed the GameGear in the face without even looking at it; it literally wiped the floor clean with it. And even before the GBA arrived, it still continued to sell massively. Then the GB colour was released which once again sold in huge figures. Then we went onto the generation of the GBA. The worlds first 32BIT hand held console that gives you the same power of the Sony Playstation, but the size of a wallet. A quite remarkable machine that has already outsold everything that is available. And why is this?
Do people prefer the price, £79.99 I must say is very appealing and it's hand held making it easier for those long car journeys or in Wookies case, for the bus journeys. Whatever the reason maybe Nintendo succeeded in production a highly successful console. But then we look at the SNES, the 16BIT console that had Sega to compete with. And unfortunately for them, it just didn't do as well as they would have hoped. Who knows why, but facts and figures show that Sega ruled that generation of console, but that wasnít too last for them.
Then Nintendo bizarrely ignored the temptations of 32BIT gaming, probably as they had bigger ideas in mind and that was for the N64. Once again, something went wrong with that. I remember the release of that back in High Wycombe on March 1st. It was like no one wanted to know, they had their Playstation and they were happy with it, end of story.
But now with have upon us the GameCube. Everyone seems interested in how it will turn out and judging from screen shots it isnít bad. Some people might not like the idea of the no online gaming possibility along with the absence of the DVD player, whilst others might not care.
It was all to do with timing on when the consoles were released to how well they did. What amazes me is how Sony, a company who have never made a console before can just release it up against Sega (At the time the best console manufacture around) and beat them hands lying down. That must have taken some will, and where thereís a will, thereís a way.
The Dreamcast obviously did something wrong as the PS2 was too near and the PS was still in its prime and just getting better. They did something wrong and now look what happened, theyíre no longer making consoles and just concentrating on games.
So, with the PS2 going down to £200, I think theyíve realised that they arenít invincible and maybe just maybe, Nintendo will show them something new. Then we see the X-Box. Oh deary me, what are they doing there in America? Do they realise that £300 is way more then most people would even dream of getting from ëSanta Clauseí for Christmas? But then look at the PS2, being released at such a high price and yet every single copy gone in an instant. Maybe it was because of their reputation from the PS, or maybe everyone just wanted something new. But with all the choice available what will happen to the games? Will they go multi-format, or just stick to the single console?
This is Mr Nice Guy signing out
Sorry for completely loosing plot of the topic.
Conker is the one I wait for most though.
so i'm not 100% sure that i will get one at launch. But i will get one for sure when stuff like resi 4 and zero, Perfect dark, Zelda and mario sunshine all come out.
