Many reasons my friend! Enough consoles to go around, enough games to go with it, an affordable price, and timing. Many many reasons. The main reason though is games the games that are released can't be any old games REALLY good ones usually popular names are always a good sign.
Ok how did the PS2 launch go?
It went all right, ok not so many consoles but hey at least many of us still got one. Sony's big names used to consist of Tekken, FIFA, Resident Evil (though not anymore), Metal Gear Solid etc... Tekken and FIFA made it to the launch and so Sony got to a good start (personally I despised both the FIFA game and Tekken Tag but then again that might be why I prefer Nintendo).
So those who got one had a nice launch well how about the GBA how would you rate that launch?
Sadly very poor, the GBA looked, felt and was basically a dream but it was very lacking in the games field. We got a remake of a very old Mario game a F zero game and the best one was really a 3rd party game Tony Hawks. I was disappointed in its launch if it was delayed a few months (which to be honest wouldn't of made much difference considering the Gameboy Colorís success) it might of got a launch it deserved with Mario Kart and Bomberman.
Now we both know why we are here you are the Gamecube analyst and specialist (although a very biased one) please tell me how well do you think the Gamecube will fair at launch and why?
Looking at the launch line up you may feel a bit disappointed. Granted unlike the N64 launch it does have a load of 3rd party games including Crazy Taxi (this is going on the American launch) but also unlike the N64 launch something is very missing. Where's Mario? Ok ok Shigsy needs a little longer how about Link? Ok ok he needs even longer for that! Donkey Kong? Not that either erm how about an original Shigsy masterpiece? What he couldn't get that in on time either! (I am referring to Pikmin at the end there).
What the? Are you trying to tell me there isn't a major Nintendo Gamecube launch title! Where is Mario and Link?
Don't fear Mario will probably reach these shores around about Christmas 2002 and Zelda Easter 2003 (I have also missed Perfect Dark which is penciled in for Autumn 2002 wouldn't hold your breath mind) just not at launch!
Ok what did Nintendo bring to the Gamecube launch or will do?
Luigi!
Luigi!?!?!?!?!?!?
Well Shigsy isn't a stupid man he knows he needs to make a game ready for launch so in-between Mario Sunshine and Zelda he squeezed in another project starring Luigi called Luigi's Mansion he Hoovers up ghosts in a platformer none of us expected Shigsy to make it is good fun and all but lacks any real depth and well it was obviously something he had mocked up in his spare time. It is a nice game but I would prefer something different from the Big N or at least make Luigi's Mansion a bit more like those classic Mario games we so love.
Ok Dringo tell me what can Nintendo do? You don't suggest they should wait 9 months for Mario to be ready; they won't make that mistake again!
You are right Luigi's Mansion may of been the best they could do as a substantial Nintendo adventure but I believe there is one other game that should try to make it to the European launch at least that could well be the launch title the Gamecube deserves!
Go no spill the beans are you referring to Pikmin?
I could be but Iím not the game Iím referring to involves Link, Mario, Donkey Kong, Samus, Luigi, Kirby etc... Yep I mean Super Smash Brothers Melee. Not simply because Super Smash Brothers rules but this game features every major Nintendo character ever!!!! There is a small platforming mode, loads of extras and a great multiplayer and combined with the charm of those great Nintendo characters this is the game Nintendo have been making all there lives perfecting it as the gaming world evolves.
Yes i see your point Dringo Super Smash Brothers Melee would be a great title to lead the Gamecube into battle with all the major characters showing up but when is it coming out in America?
Well sadly it isn't the launch date but it is only 2 weeks after on December the 3rd so could Nintendo and the games developers HAL get this game out for the European launch? I damn well hope so!
Here's to the Future
Dringo
The timing, the reputation, the publicity and the price will all determine who is going to sell like a Big Mac, or flop like the Saturn. The timing needs to be so that everyone is fed up with the PS2 and they've had their fun, and now the GameCube can pop in there and take the crown (although we all know it won't happen).
There reputation is good and so is the price and the sale figures from America make it look hopeful, let's just wait and see then I'll pass judgement.
As for market share the N64 sold millions more than the SNES and Nintendo made a packet out of the Snes so therefore Nintendo are getting tonnes of money thats all i care about as long as the money doesn't dry up and with the GBA's success i doubt it ever will (dont forget pokemon) thats all i care about. Everyone in my school can have a PS2 for all i care as long as Nintendo have enough cash to churn out the worlds greatest games im happy as ill have them.
Although Nintendo themselves are mainly a family based game maker, the increase in third party games certainly accounts for everyone's tastes- there's a mix of sports, action and even some survival horror games chucked in for good messure!
But there still remains that question as to what market Nintendo are targetting. First they say they want to have a more adult orientated console, and then they show off big colourful cubes! Whatever you say, this is NOT cool... it's kiddie, and that's how the general public will see it!
I think the most important thing for Nintendo to do is to market the console correctly... making sure they show off it's adult market capacity, as well as sticking pictures of it in kids TV programs. The fact the console looks kiddie is a bad way to start marketing it, but hopefully if they put accross the mix of games then things will go well.
Try the interview

When he said Younger audience, he meant gamers who wanted fun exciting games rather than the old farts who prefer their racers with all the dull parts or realism but all danger and excitement removed.
Apart from the "realistic" racing genre. I don't think that the PS2 has anything else over the Gamecube, genre wise.

There is no evidence of that!
Don't get carried away with someone else's statement that it took place on Nintendo Japan's site.
Translation issues have to be addressed too.
I'll believe it when I see it on IGNCube or PGameCube. Which of course I haven't.

Try the interview with Shiggsy on FOG Chat. He actually said that it was for a younger audience, not that it's necessarily bad.

As in 'Countless' Interviews, the genius actually stated that he wanted it to be a console "For Everyone" regardless of age! And so it should be too!
Evidence pointing to that would be 'all of his upcoming games', not to mention Animal Forest, were he want's the whole household to take part.
