I would start by checking your line stats in case something's gone pear shaped!
Post the results from a BT Speedtest: www.speedtester.bt.com
I remember you are on a great line and normally get a maximum 8128 sync (20CN network) - the results will show how things currently are.
You can also try using the BT TEST socket revealed by removing the faceplate on a modern Master Socket (NTE5) to see if something else might be affecting things.
Ideally you should compare the line stats from the TEST socket and from your normal connection. Attenuation/Sync/SNR
Or, get your son to re-test his ping when plugged directly into the TEST socket.
NB. Try NOT to reconnect during the evening/night to get the best 'sync'.
