In http://ukchatforums.reserve.co.uk/ (space) display_messages.php?threadid=77785&forumid=135 you stated that you got the extension cables from dabs.com

Could you tell me the name of the cables I need, or a link to the page.

Thanks for the help.

Col, from my knowledge of networks I think you need to answer a few questions first before you continue.

1. Do you have ADSL?

2. If you don't have ADSL do you have a 56k Modem installed on your current computer which you dial up to your ISP with?

3. Can you let us know exactly what kit you have for your setup there, not really about the computer spec as thats irrelevant but it's all the bits you use to connect to the Internet.

If your answer to number 1 is yes then the solution for getting your PS2 online will be, buy the Network Adapter and a CAT5 cable (cross over or straight?) and plug cable from PS2 adapter into your computer. You will need to buy a NIC (Network Interface Card) to install in your computer.

Once this is done you should be able to get ICS up and running and the PS2 will use the ADSL connection from the computer via ICS. The only problem with this is that you will have to have your computer switched on all the time you want your PS2 online but if you've got ADSL then dial up costs are all included in your connection fee.

If you dont have ADSL you will need to find out more about this as I don't and wont need that solution. Not sure whether the PS2 Adapter is released with a cable converter? FM is the best to answer that.

If your on a dial up with 56k connection again you will be paying your connection fee for when your connected to your ISP. Also bear in mind that some ISPs don't allow you continuous connection and disconnect you after two hours.....that means you'll be dialing backup and could be in the middle of a shoot out when your connection goes down.

DAMN IT that will not work now.

Turn off your PlayStation 2, cable or ADSL modem and router.
Plug a straight through network cable into a free out port on your cable or ADSL modem.

NO DAMN OUTPORT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that I've calmed down, I'll have to persuade my mam to buy a router. So do I need the same cables as I was getting before?

2. Take your straight through CAT5 network cable, and locate a free out port on your cable or ADSL modem. (The port will probably say 'out' above or near it. If you can't find an 'out' port, check your modem's manual.) Push - but do not force - the network cable all the way into your cable or ADSL modem's out port until you hear a small click. The cable is then connected.

Just had a look at the modem and mine dosn't have one!

It says if you have a slow computer, mine is XP, 2.0GHZ, 40GB harddrive, 256mb RAM.

Will that be fast enough?

Just started to read that and it says:

connection achieved using Internet Connection Sharing is by far the cheapest connection type (if you already have a Windows-based PC), and probably the most suitable if you own an internal Ethernet-based cable or ADSL modem

Does the internal part simply nto aplly to me?

Beware of USB routers! There are good ones (Draytek), but they cost around £120 or something. The cheaper ones that you'll find in the shops won't be able to handle voice communications in SOCOM. I don't want to get too technical but I spent a lot of cash trying to get one that works, and it was a wasted effort (luckily I was able to get a refund).

Not trying to knock your advice FM, but if somebody doesn't have an ethernet modem, and doesn't want to use ICS - then the best thing to do is buy an ethernet modem!

I've tried every method of connecting (apart from direct), and ICS was the easiest, cheapest, and most succesful.
