All they do is help you to pause downloads and stuff, they don't make it any faster.
If you've dialed up, put your mouse over the two screens flashing at the bottom right of the screen, tell me what speed you're connected at. That way you may be able to see if it's the line quality that's holding you back or if you're using an old 36.6k modem.
