Well, I cant see anything in DF's T&C about social bookmarking specifically? But if they're being uncooperative then find yourself a new host. In my opinion, Hmmm... is totally correct though. I think you're being a bit premature in your worrying.

My recommendation would still be to launch it and react to the traffic volumes if it becomes an issue.

I would be very surprised if a new site achieves 100,000 visitors a day! If it does then you'll be able to generate enough revenue to solve your hosting problems. A win-win situation.

That's what my girlfriend would say ^^ but I'm doing things differently and I need to know that my host can handle 10,000 to 100,000 users a day :) Social bookmarking sites would cause huge spikes but I'm also calling in some favours and spending a fair bit of money on advertising. I'd hate for that to crash my site and go to waste. What good is a few hundred banner ads pointing to a suspended website :(

That's true I suppose :P Maybe you're different offline, some nice guy who's too modest about accepting awards at classy gala award dinners. And I'm guessing this wasnt even your first ;)

DF. I wrote them a long email explaining what I wanted. Before they just said they'd suspend it without going into detail so I wanted to know what would happen.

"If we notice undue load is caused on the server,we will first try out other means than suspending your site.If those wont work and the site continues to cause load the site will be suspended. You WONT loose any contents once the site is suspended. And it wont come backup by itself. We will have to see to it that the pages or links that were causing the load are removed. After that the site will be brought up immediately.(You will be also notified immediately if the site is ever suspended)"

I'm guessing it's a real bad idea if I went for an unmanaged server and knew nothing about running a server and updating it myself, right?

3/ Get the site launched and established with search engines and 'social bookmarking' and worry about being too popular when you are... ;¬P

Okay looks like I have two options. 1. Discourage social bookmarking on my site or 2. Sod it and deal with my site being suspended.

Oh dear just found out and I don't like it. How can I manage a server myself :S and I certainly cant afford £400 a month for a managed server.

Crap, why do I keep running into these problems =(

What's the difference between a managed and unmanaged dedicated server? :S
