You cant step into a park, walk down a street or get on some public transport without seeing some teenager dressed in black. these people are gothics or goths as they are usualy called.

why are they that way is what i want to know. its usualy connected to music. when i listen to music, like papa roach or linkin park, it doesnt make me want to dress up all in black, but it does make goths do it.in most of these bands the members dont go around looking like the way goths do, they wear baggy t-shirts etc.

me and my mate went into reading the other day. there is this park that lies between the town and the big out of town shops like comet and toys r us.i call the par 'goth park' as it is full of gothics. anyway me and my mate walked into thge park and he said 'i dont see any goths here' i told him to look at a tree, he looked over at a big tree that i was pointing to, underneath it was a group of 30 - 40 goths, just sat there.everywhere you looked the was groups of goths, some small, some big. It was a bit like steping into Jurassic park, the whole place was over run by goths.

I didnt really used to care about goths but now I do.I had been best friends with someone since year 7, then in year 10 he started to get reallyt into rock and heavy metal music.slowly we began to grow apart, then he stopped hanging with me and everyone else he used to be friends with, and befriended this group of outcasts.then we all went away for two weeks of work experience, i was on my luch break, down town and i saw the guy i just mentioned whos name is ollie.he was walking around with his mum and baby sister, wearing a big, black, hooded, maralyn manson top and he had died his hair black, and geled it up into spike things.soon rumours started to pour in when we were back at school, ollie wears black nail varnish and things like that. these rumours were confirmed last friday, when we had a non uniform day. he came to school completly goth'ed up, he had black trowsers that were covered in safety pins, loads of black, spikey braclets, another black top,a bag covered with black writing saying things like
'you have the right to bleed'which was also covered in safety pins and he had black nail varnish.he was showing off his nokia phone a bit as well, which he had spray painted black and covered with spikes. the dumbest thing of all is if you say to him that hes a goth, he will danie it and say that he isnt.

This guy ( that i just spoke about) once was my best friend, who loved nintendo.i remember him telling me onbce that he had seen a friend from his old school in town one day.his friend had gone goth since he had last seen him.ollie said to me that the boy was wearing all black, chains, spikes and even black lipstick. ollie went on to say how he took the mick out of the boy and told him how stupid he looked. i think that thios friend had something to do with his change.he had brown hair and dressed like normal people, now that he has changed i dont speak to him, i just stay away.were now in year 11, i have not made any contact with him for almost a year.

When you ask a goth why they dress in black, they usualy say something like this:

Its represents the act of death, and the meaningless of life

Its cool

I do it to be different

Why do they say it makes them different? the first few people who did it were different, but now that there are loads of them, they arnt different or unique.

If you see anyone doing these things or whearing these things, there could only be a matter of time until they go goth on you:

Wearing all black
Carrying chains
wearing spiky neclesses or braclets
dying their hair black
writing 'evil' things on their bags
painting their nails black
wearing black lipstick
sitiing still, not moving, talking or laughing in a park
or any over goth like behaviour

I just dont know why they become that way.is it a cry for help, an act of rebellion or do they just want to look dumb and have everyone take the mick ad throw things at them? we may never know.

theres a small group of goths at my school, about 4 and their kind of leader is my old best friend.is there any near you?

I hope none of you on this forum are,but if anyone is, why are you and whats good about it?

thanks for reading

Can you give the web address of the picture? I tried that www.rotten.com but it wouldn't load. I'm not entirely sure what he died of. I do know that he did have addictions (drugs and/or drink I assume) before he died (the reason he wasn't on 'about time' much) so I think it was in some way related to that, but not exactly sure how.

PS just for anyone else Pennywise are not a gothic band (although gothic punk bands do exist, eg. The Damned, AFI, The Misfits)

Oh right, Ok, thanks for the information Sibs. Do you know what he died of? In the picture, it damn sure didn't look like natural causes! He was like a damn shish-ka-bab!

No, not the lead singer, one of the original members, Jason Matthew Thirsk, who played bass is dead. He played on their dubet EP 'Wildcard', their first album 'Pennywise' and their second album 'Unknown Road'. After that he didn't play full time on the following album 'About Time' but played in about two of the songs because he was getting over his addictions. After that album however, he died, and the bass player and friend from 'About Time' (Randy Bradbury) joined the band properly. Their next album 'Full Circle' was a tribute to Jason, and probably their darkest album. Since that they have released 'Straight Ahead', the live album 'Live @ The Key Club' and their most recent offering, 'Land Of The Free?'

Pennywise are an incredible punk band, with hard hitting lyrics that anyone can relate to, and a style that is fast, aggressive, heavy, words just cannot describe it you have to listen.

Pennywise Are:
Jim Lindberg-Vocals
Bryon McMackin-Drums
Fletcher Dragge-Guitar
Randy Bradbury-Bass

Jason Matthew Thirsk-Bass (RIP)

Thank you very much Sibs, that was me! My exact quote was, "They're human too, probably from a broken home and are rebelling.".

Isn't the lead singer of Pennywise dead? I remember seeing on www.rotten.com a picture of him dead in a doorway, covered in bloody. Anything to back this up? Cheers. Firebalt.

Yeah, I understand that, but just because something may be offensive you can't say it is wrong. If we went through life making sure we offended no-one we would be pretty dull. I mean you may think me wearing a T-Shirt with 'Bad Religion' (a punk-rock band) on it is wrong and you may think less of me because it may offend people, but it is my clothing, I choose. Just as a goth can choose what to or not to wear. Sure, you may think it is wrong to wear something like a KKK style white hood, but they should stop the KKK, not their style of clothing. I mean there are rascist attacks here and in America that are not perpertrated by people wearing white hoods and robes, so it isn't the clothing making them do it.

Rascism is a state of mind, and even this topic can be likened to it. Black people have been persecuted for the colour of their skin, and now you (not aiming this at anyone in particluar) are judging people by what they choose to wear. Both are wrong, and are only bred by a distrust of anything different from ourselves.

'K.... I see your point, but I said "white hood" which insinuates Klan clothing, perhaps I should have been more specific, but hey....
Also, Klan clothing can cause offense outside of Southern states of the US.

I would ask that you understand what I write, not just read it.

First to Tarrant, I understand the point you are trying to make, but by wearing the clothes they choose to, goths aren't doing anything to harm anyone. Wering a white hood isn't harming anyone, but burning black people as the Koo Klux Klan do is not something that you can say is linked to the way they dress. You may say that if someone you know began increasingly all white etc. you may go "oh my god! He/She's becoming a Klanner!" but it'd be a little stupid of you to think they're becoming something like that just because they are wearing white clothes. Sure it 'could' be a sign that they are, just as playing video games like GTA and Carmaggeddon 'could' make you or I go out and run over hundreds of innocent people.

It's also stupid to assume that because these people choose to dress differently, that they must have something wrong with them, as someone said, "they are probably from broken homes or depressed" (something along those lines). But how the hell do you know why they dress the way they do. Maybe they just like the clothes, and other accessories, and think they are 'cool' just as most of the trendy fashion followers think fcuk or calvin klein is 'cool'. Neither of them are right, because it is a matter of opinion, but I give more respect to someone who doesn't just follow a crowd, and copy what they do. At least they are not letting the fashion industry tell them what they should and shouldn't be wearing!

As Pennywise, one of the greatest socio-political bands around have said (in the song 'Perfect People')

"Screwed up perfect people,
F*** they all look the same!"

Embrace our differences and don't ridicule what you don't understand, just because it is different.

all the goths in my school are actualy from rich stuck up families, and used to be quite posh before turning goth.

we had another non uniform day today (children in need) and so we got to see who is goth and who isnt. The younger ones are starting to go goth now, a year eight girl had eye shadow all over her face making her look like batman.

my old friend who is now a goth who i mentioned in the original post, was all gothed up again. someone said to him 's are you a goth now?' he said no, im not a goth, i dont bite the heads off chickens' WHAT?

Firstly, let me open this post by saying I am not a Goth. However, I think that I show more respect to Goths than any of you do. Hell, I almost considered becoming one, but looking back, I wouldn't. Goths are branded the name "Freaks" by society, which is prejudiced, unless you've actually met the person and know what they're like. I have no idea whether Goths' actions are for good or for evil (could someone enlighten me in that field please!). Until I know the answer, I will treat Goths as I treat Greebos - they will be equal to anyone else. Can you say Human Rights Act? They're human too, probably from a broken home and are rebelling. Some say I'd be a good psychologist.

While I appreciate your open mindedness, I feel an overwhelming urge to say ask;

What if I choose to wear a white hood and burn blacks?*

People should not be allowed to act "how they want", people should show respect for others first, "act accordingly" second!

*Tarrant does not condone the wearing of white hoods or burning of blacks in any way!
