Does anybody here own a Maxx pc?

Basically being quite open considering i'm on SR ;) I am half and half between a Maxx Pc or a Dell Pc. The only pointer moving me away from the dell is the slightly higher pricing I suppose...So has anyone on here got a maxx pc and how has it been?

I am also half and half on the Athlon 1400 or the P4 1500. Not sure which is the best choice.

I would build my own pc but 1) I can't be bothered 2) I don't get trade price anymore. Unless someone can persuade me otherwise :)

I am also interested in the officejet and am wondering how good that is?

All info very welcome :)

The anti-static wrist kit is a must. I zapped my dads mobo the other day, but with mobos you always seem to zap half the components on it too. :( ended up costing about £1k.

Personally I prefer building my own pc as you know how much everything costs and you could save yourself some money in the process. However make sure you do know what you are doing before trying to build one. Get yourself an anti-static wristband for the added security knowing that you aren't "zapping" your pc components.
If you are going to built your own pc, perhaps ask your mates, etc if they are selling any computer components to save you a bit of cash.

You were wondering whether to get P4 or Athlon, I would say get an athlon, either XP or Thunderbird both are superb.

Yep, I've had three MAXX PC's - all excellent, and each top-of-the-range when I bought them.

The first machine (P150) had no problems at all.

The second (P3 500) had a faulty modem, but was fine apart from that.

The 3rd (and current) is a P4 1.7GHz. As Reaper says, I did have problems with it overheating. The only difference to the listed spec was that I had a GeForce3 card and second 40Gb HDD installed by SR.

All I added myself was a videocapture card and 3rd 30Gb HD from my old PC, and it was overheating regularly. It didn't do any harm; I only know because I had the Intel System Monitor software installed, and it was giving me warnings that zones had exceeded the recommended limits.

I've installed 2 extra 8cm fans (one blowing out the back, one in the front blowing inward to cirluate air), 'system blower' in a slot below the cards which vents through the back of the case, and a Just Cooler 'twin turbo' unit in a spare 5.25-inch drive bay, above the HD's, which vents through the front of the case. That's kept it nice and cool, even during the last few roasting days of the summer we had.

I've always built my own PCs so I can't comment on the MAXX specifically, but from what I've heard they use high quality components and seem to be reliable and good value for money. Wookiee (I think?) did mention some problems about overheating, and the last thing you want is to fry your nice new chip, so you might want to check what cooler they use and possibly my your own Kanie Wing or SK6 later.

P4/Athlon...especially for an XP, but even an Athlon T-bird would rank higher than the p4 1.5 for me. The athlons are good for overclocking (once armed with a bit of tipp-ex and steady hands) and consistantly beat the P4s in benchmarks. They should also bring the price down quite a bit, as you can use DDR ram instead of rambus and cheaper motherboards. Go with the Athlon, can't fault my XP 1600+.

I always try and prod people in to building their own - you may not save a lot of money, but you'll get exactly the parts you want, you know they wont be cheap versions to save money for the manufacturers, you have more knowledge about the PC if it goes wrong, and you can reuse old parts so you don't end up with 5 floppy drives from old machines lying around on the floor *looks around*. Think about it, you've always got this forum for help, and I enjoy it really..
