As those of you who follow my progress and topics with bated breath on these forums will no doubt recall that superb piece I did a week or two ago on the subject of butchering classics. ìButchered Classicsî I believe it was called, but my genius stretched far beyond the title of that piece. So for those of you who do remember/ have an online shrine to the work of the Tarrant, I apologise.
For those of you who are still denying your true nature and pretending like you donít love me, allow me to quickly recap on the rant.

Basically, I saw what theyíd done to ìFroggerî in bringing it to the next gen consoles. What was once a true masterpiece to behold, a king amongst kings in gaming history was found to be lending its name to a genre in which it did not belong. Frogger, the fun filled, action packed ìExtreme street crossingî sim, was to become yet ANOTHER ì3-D action adventureî. The once flawlessly simplistic work of genius was to be lost in a genre of limited fame.
My problem was not just a personal one, I felt that the new ìFroggerî would radically alter gaming history, thatís not to say change the past, but to alter younger gamers perception of the past. By re-using the name ìFroggerî this new 3-D Bi-pedal frog with backpack is what will be attributed to the name. I thought and still think that is wrong!

However, I have not brought you all here today to walk over old ground and remind you of good times gone by, nor to rant, rave and complain about something else. Infact I have summoned you to witness my appreciation of ìan old classic revivedî done right!
MAXIMO: Ghosts to Glory is a what looks like another 3-D platform action adventure and is said to be a next generation, updated version of that old Capcom classic ìGhosts ën Goblinsî.

Ghosts ën goblins is and was an absolute classic in its day. Though itís not as old as Frogger its memory is just as valuable to me and most of the gaming community. So when I heard of a ìremakeî I was a little apprehensive to say the least, especially so soon after hearing about Frogger ñ I was about ready to launch a full scale assault on those responsible for burying classics when I realised that Maximno wasnít at all guilty of the same hanus crimes as Frogger.

For a start it would seem Maximo IS adhering to all the gameplay elements that made Ghosts ën Goblins such a classic. Certain things like the loss of armour and clothing as you take more damage look to have been taken on board (seeing a night run about in his spotted boxers always makes me laugh anyway), I assume the ìdouble jumpî will also be back ñ I think GínG was the first game to implement this! Unlike the hideous genre switch that Frogger has suffered, Maximo is more of a genre development, it makes sense for the Ghosts ën Goblins style to go there. By far the most important aspect for me anyway is the fact that Ghosts ën goblins isnít lending its name to this enterprise, so if Maximo turns out to be a pile of pants, the good name of GínG isnít affected and if it succeeds it will strengthen the history of GínG!

So, in summing up Frogger bad, Maximo good!

Maximo is set for PS2 release sometime in the year 2002!

Thanks for reading fans! Stay tuned for more from me later in the week!

as long as it's good as the old version i'd be more than happy

but mr tarrant sir may i suggest for your next rant the absolute tragedy that occured when they ported one of the greatest ever football experiences ever - Sensible World Of Soccer on the amiga to the playstation and turned it into some drivel like adidas power soccer. that was a very dark day of gaming for me

Maximo and Frogger are complete opposites.

One takes the name of a good game to print money, but it leaves out everything to do with the classic game.

The other comes up with a new name, leaving the old one's image intact, but takes all the best elements of the classic game's gameplay.

Being a cartoony game (It looks very much like a action based Zelda64), Maximo might not appeal to the average PS2 owner.

Maximo and The Devil May Cry are definately games I'd like to see Capcom release on the Gamecube.

Can't really say at this stage, early days and all that.
If you were a fan of Ghosts 'n Goblins its worth checking out though!

Problem is most of you on here will be a bit too young to be remembering Ghosts 'n Goblins with ant real clarity.

Classic is the word, if Maximo can bring that classic gaming up to date it could be worth getting. I'm just glad too see them trying to continue older style under new titles rather than killing the memory of the games I grew up with.

-Boycott new Frogger!
