There's over 50,000,000 PS2 gamers out there. They can't ALL be hardcore.

No, it's just so that they can charge if they ever want to. If they don't tell you, they can't charge you.

Where did you get that generalisation from?
Think about it:
Unlike the XBox setup, developers foot the bill for the online segment of their games on the PS2, therefore it's up to them whether or not to include it and whether or not to charge for it. Most don't charge.
With the P2P games that WILL get released (mainly the huge MMORPGs) if they're Sony titles Sony do a 'bulk discount' via their SonyStation setup, allowing you to choose what titles you want to play and gain a discount for playing more than one.
On the whole, though, most gamers find one game they really like and then play it to death, so if it's a P2P game they're only having to pay one fee at a time. There's not that many that are going to subscribe to Star Wars: Galaxies, EverQuest Online Adventures and Final Fantasy XI all at the same time, not because of the cost but because of the nature of these games, you've only really got time to play one.
Best bit? Most PS2 gamers are casual, therefore won't be using their network adaptors much, hence why Sony couldn't get away with charging £40 a year just for providing network capability for their PS2.

Yes.
Yes it was.
MS charge yearly and have got quite a few online games. Although EA have refused to support it because they want to charge fees per month.
Maybe this game will stay free, but look to the future.
I see charges.
And lots of them.
