Speedball is being updated.

This is quite possibly the finest game ever made, and itís being updated with online play capabilities for the PC (might be other formats as well, I donít really care).
If you have never played this game, then you should be ashamed that you are so young as to miss out on the finest video-game experience ever.
This was before we called them video-games, they were known as ìComputer Gamesî and you could eat things like Spangles and Chewitts whilst you waited.
It was on the Amiga and rocked big time.

Whatís it about?
Two teams in an arena.
The metal-ball comes out and you have to punch, kick, shoot, bomb the other team until you can score by slamming into the hole/goal.
Imagine American Football without the nancy protective gear and bombs or chainsaws.

Occasionally you could cripple a player enough that he was carted off by robots with the cry of ìIce CreamÖIce Creamî as the prone body was spirited away.
For every match you won, you earned money to spend on improving players abilities, thus making them even more psychopathic and blood-thirsty.
There were leagues, championships and a two-player mode where you could trounce your mate and dance like a bear when you killed his best players.
Excellent.

And itís being updated and polished.
You should be moist at the prospect of playing this legend in two-player sports-related violence.

I never found Bomberman for the N64. Was it really that bad ? Thanks in advance. I was searching for it.

From the Bitmap Bros website:

We have had a skeleton team working on Speedball in the background for quite some time but have been waiting for all of the various aspects such as technology, platforms, climate, moon cycle etc. to fall into place before we were ready to announce it. Work is now fully underway on the project, with release slated tentatively for X-mas 2002.

The aim of Speedball Arena is to create a fully-fledged online sport, with a simple to pick up and hard to master game dynamic that, along with our innovative training and player class system will give players an almost infinite learning curve. As with any 'sport' there will be leagues and tournaments, ranking systems, spectating and even a transfer market. Imagine downloading a 'highlights' program every evening to catch up on what you have missed or swapping highlights and replays with clan members.

We are also already talking with some exciting companies regarding sponsorship and advertising, so picture yourself 'shopping' on the web site for a new 'branded' skin, or new armour. You will also be able to browse your league standings, transfer market and game results on compatible mobile phones.

For anyone that already knows the Speedball series, you can expect the same fast, brutal, rule free gameplay underneath a mass of subtle and not-so-subtle new additions. For anyone that doesn't, think more UT / Capture the Flag than Soccer! This is not sport as you know it. There may not be any guns but I can promise there will be as much satisfaction in mastering the ball dynamics and landing a solid punch as perfecting your railgun technique. Obviously the big factor is teamplay.

Obviously the big talking points have also been which technology we are using and on what platforms. Our comment on that at the moment is, predictably, 'no comment' other than that we will be supporting the platforms that allow us to do justice to our concept. The leak will not affect our official launch strategy or announcements, so expect much more regarding confirmation of technology, publishers, platforms and strategic partners in the near future, as well as more facts and teasers and a proper website.

What we have announced so far merely scratches the surface of what the final product will deliver, both in terms of features and also visual quality.

"Ice Cream...Ice Cream"

I remember my friend training the skill of his players so he could do fancy things but my brutes would just kick the living daylights out of his pansies.

Not wanting to be too pessimistic, but do you think that they can actually get it right?

So many classic games are "updated" and they turn out to be poo. The most obvious being SuperBomberman. Look how crap that was on the N64.

We must bow our heads and thank the Bitmap Bros for updating the single finest game to ever grace our childhood memories.

Unreal Tournament is a pale imitator without the goal scoring aspect.

I remember this from the days of the good old Amiga.

I had heard there was going to be an update, out on everything I think.

Certainly PC, PS2 and XBox. I think GC as well.
