I can see how people would be put off by the ridiculous idea that you can stand next to someone swinging your sword, and only actually hit 5% of the time.
But horses for courses and all that.
I'm not going near Fable for the simple reason that Molyneaux hyped Black and White with the exact same things "ever changing lands" "developing character over time he *actually bears the marks of battle*" etc and it turned out to be little more than an enjoyable Tamagotchi game ruined with micro-management.
Anything with Molyneaux's name on gets warning bells from me.

Granted i'd have liked to kill people from stage 1, but it's not just that. I find the setting dull, I'm not into all the beardy speak and leveling up and all that kind of stuff. I'm sure it's good if you like painting models of orks and controlling army's of wood elves at the weekend, but it's just not my type of thing.
Fable looks sweet though.
Morrowind starts you off on a boat with no clue as to what to do, weak as a newborn and unprepared for anything.
Give it time and you'll be nails-hard, feared and respected in towns and able to do anything you want to.
There's no stats or owt in it, combat isn't turned-based, you dont have to faff about comparing attack+45 skill or anything like that.
I spent my first 3 days in Seeyda Neen (1st town) pearl diving (earned almost 1,000) and running errands for people. By the time I had explored the areas, helping out people on the way and accepting little jobs, I was a lot tougher than I was at the start.
By the time I hit Balmora, I was already saddled with a reputation and they loved me.
You can't just start off attacking people/things/creatures because you'll get dead/arrested.
It takes time to get into. Which you can either want to do or not, but it's not boring.
Highly unlikely though, but from what i've seen it's looking damn nice. Just hope they don't go down the same road that Morrowind goes down and just make it too dull.

Fable is being developed by Big Blue Box - An independant developer who was'nt involved in Black and White.
Lionhead are just publishing the game.
*fingers crossed*
