It has come to my attention that a lot of people have been chatting about the ultimate console in these very forums, whether it be fictional or otherwise (uberthingummywatsitsphere anyone?). To this end, Iíve worked out the ultimate Game Pad to accompany such a console.

I figure loads of the current controllers have too few buttons, leading to a necessity to press several buttons with one thumb and limited control functionality. This is clearly unacceptable. Thus, my pad will have, in place of the four circle-cross-square-triangle buttons, sixteen different buttons each marked with a different shape. Possibly octagons, decahedrons, nonagons, heptahedrons, rhomboids and the like. Also, instead of R1, R2, L1, and L2, there will be R1,R2,R3,and R4, and the same on the left side. Where your ring and little fingers would normally rest will be two more buttons on each side (one for each finger). Also, the directional pad will be surrounded by four ìshiftî buttons, as well as a hat switch capable of being set to 8 different positions or modes. So, with the hat switch, a single shift button and one other button, a total of 1056 key presses are possible. Clearly enough for the most demanding of games, and you wonít have to press any more than one button with each thumb.

As for analogue joystick-things, instead of the usual 2 there will be 6, three down each inner side of the controller. There will also be a laptop-esque touchpad to operate the cursor on screen. Each controller will be equipped with 4 gigs of hard drive for save games and the like, and be totally cordless, as well as including an LCD tv screen on the front for displaying miscellaneous data (dreamcast stylie, only better) and can be turned over and opened up to reveal a text messaging facility. There are suggestions from some quarters to include an MP3 function, be we donít want to get ridiculous now do we?

Whaddya think?

I've got one of those hubs that plugs into my USB port, allowing me to play with my N64 or PS controllers on my PC. I find it really useful, as I love the N64 controller!!!!

They also blatently overclock their PCs. I can tell tihs due to the big cooling box and silver piping leading into the back of their flagship machine!

The other MS pads are excellent, buy I've always thought the "tilt" pads and other gimmics like that were a bit superfluous. But I know some people who have them and think they're a great laff. Obviously you gotta use it for the right thing. PC world were doing a deal of a saitec tilt pad with... get this... delta force land warrior! You must be having a laugh! Game pads (and ESPECIALLY tilt pads) are about the last choice for an FPS. Give me mouse + keys anyday.

Fair enough. Does everyone think that? Does the PS (1 or 2) controller suck? what do you lot reckon is the best controller so far? I like my MS sidewinder pro I've got for my PC here. :)

To be honest, one of thereasons why I'm sticking with Nintendo instead of buying a PS2 right away is the game pad - I really don't like the way Sony has labelled their pad, and prefer the "D Pad, control stick, c-stick/buttons, z trigger, B, A and L and R of the N64, and the GC's pad is just an extension of this. None of that L1 and L2 crap there.
