This annoys the hell out of me. MSR was one of my favourite games on Dreamcast, I'm not a big racing fan but it managed to be realistic but still remain fun.
This is why PGR annoys the crap out of me. MSR was always challenging but it never felt like an uphill struggle and never got to the point where you didn't want to play anymore because it was just too damn frustrating. There was always steady progression and it always rewarded you for doing well.
This is were PGR goes horribly wrong, it's to be blunt just damn annoying. Where some of the new additions are nice, the graphics are nice, the new tracks are nice etc etc. What they've done with the game play down right sucks. The new Kudos system is rubbish, the fact that you can only use 1 joker in every cup seems like a small niggle but it's actually really frustrating, the level of difficulty on some of the challenges had increased 10 fold to stupid levels. Oh and don't get me started on the stupid cone challenges.
Don't get me wrong, PGR IMO is still an above average racing game and I will stick with it. But it's no longer the fun game that MSR was, it's frustrating to the point that I want to smash the TV with my fist.
I like the way Kudos are banked, that way you know how many you have and don't lose them all if you make one wee mistake.
I like the cone races. They add a different mode to the game, obviously, but also give something different when you get tired of racing. Plus they teach you how to really handle a car.
I don't like the way they changed the jokers. I want the MSR style back.
I liked the 10 races per level thing from MSR too.
I also love the fact that there is an Aston Martin in there. I love Astons, and although I haven't unlocked it yet it is one of the best things about the game to me. Hell I even bought Vanishing Point on the DC for the Aston in it. Which reminds me I never finished that game. Might go back and give it another go...
Anyway... back to PGR. I liked the name Metropolis Street Racer better. I never thought of Batman with it.
> my favourite racing game of all time
I just noticed you say "of all time" alot. Not kidding, you so say it alot. Not having a dig but you know thought i'd point it out :P
anyway my fav car is the F-50 because of the performance, but in terms of sexyness you gotta love the Viper.
I still have a few golds to get in Medal Persuit but it is by far the hardest mode.
Keep plugging away through the not so fun starting events and you will like it when you get a car with more umph. Then you will want more, bigger and better cars- thus the cycle continues. I suggest getting all Golds in Quick Race mode to get yourself a nice Ferrari. When you get the better cars then you can go for the Gold medals. The car select screen tells you how to unlock each car underneth anyway.
PS as you are starting make sure you are playing in 60HTZ as it makes the game slightly easier, the DC version had the same quirk as it makes you a bit faster.
They havn't cocked it up, in fact they have made it so much better and you will come to realise that. I bet you your view will mind over the next few weeks.
God knows how I'm gonna get golds but I'm not bothered about them at the moment.
You will get to a point early on where you think "what the hell can I do to win". Get to the 355 race and all this will be forgotten. You have to be patient early on because the leap from the ordinary cars to the Corvette >>> is quite a big one. It doesn't get much harder than earlier on but it will frustrate you at times.
When I used to get frustrated I would turn it off and go for a run or something. When I came back I had thought of different things to try and I found a way to actually win races without all the effort. Its without a doubt my favourite racing game of all time and its better than MSR in every area.
Stick with it thought because once you struggle past the near impossible stages you will hit a high and rave about it for weeks. By this post I am guessing you tried out the Medal Persuit mode?
;)
Now, I'm not one to blow my own trumpet, but I'm v.good at games, and usually persevere with them til I finish. Maybe its cos I played GT3 for so long, that I can't be assed to do it again.
Once I've bored myself with morrowind I'll go back to it.
