This annoys the hell out of me. MSR was one of my favourite games on Dreamcast, I'm not a big racing fan but it managed to be realistic but still remain fun.
This is why PGR annoys the crap out of me. MSR was always challenging but it never felt like an uphill struggle and never got to the point where you didn't want to play anymore because it was just too damn frustrating. There was always steady progression and it always rewarded you for doing well.
This is were PGR goes horribly wrong, it's to be blunt just damn annoying. Where some of the new additions are nice, the graphics are nice, the new tracks are nice etc etc. What they've done with the game play down right sucks. The new Kudos system is rubbish, the fact that you can only use 1 joker in every cup seems like a small niggle but it's actually really frustrating, the level of difficulty on some of the challenges had increased 10 fold to stupid levels. Oh and don't get me started on the stupid cone challenges.
Don't get me wrong, PGR IMO is still an above average racing game and I will stick with it. But it's no longer the fun game that MSR was, it's frustrating to the point that I want to smash the TV with my fist.
Some of them took me ages, the Mini and Audi TT laps were hard cause the cars are so damn sucky.
It's actually harder than PGR, in some ways. For example, in the Japan tracks in M:SR, the barriers in the middle of the road have bits sticking up which can stop you completely, while in PGR they are just kerbs that you can drive over.
Also in M:SR, you can only have 6 cars at once, and have to do a challenge to get a new car. These challenges aren't always that difficult. M:SR also have the specials, where you had to do them with set cars and at set times.
These may only seem little, but they all add up to make the game more challenging.
> Nah.
I decided to re-insert PGR into my Xbox today and it brought back memorys of how good it is. IT ROCKS!
Fast. Very Fast and fun.
Ok then...
Anyway, today I was on a mission to get ALL the golds in PGR, and that meant Medal Persuit. I spent ages playing it and got some of the golds quite easily, however getting a fast lap with some of the slower cars is a bit of a challange. Getting the gold medal for the Mini took a while, but I did get it.
Mav, PGR is worth £12. Look down the back of your sofa, grab soem change and pick this one up. You'll be surprised how playable it is. Nothing like GT3. PGR is about the gameplay.
PGR is a top game. Yes, it is different from MSR on the DC, but different doesn't always mean worse... It does take a while to get into, but once you've got the hang of it, it is one of the best games around. I actually completed PGR before finishing Halo off...
As for getting stuck on some of the challenges, a fast car isn't always the answer. For example, on some of the fastest lap challenges, instead of aiming for the quickest lap you can, drop the target time so it's a bit slower, this will then give you a bit more time each lap to do handbrake turns etc and combo moves together, this will then give you a higer K overall, eventhough your lap was slower.
It's this that sets PGR apart from other racers, you have to think about you're strengths and weaknesses, as there's more than one way to get the medal.
Oh, and even though I may, on occasion smell, I'm still better at PGR than Mantis. And I'll prove it.
When PGR 2 comes along and I've got Xbox Live...
