The question requires you to have been asked that as a question for it to make sense. You weren't asked that question, you were raplying to no-one, therefore your question did not make sense.
Like if I wrote
You asked me about strawberrys?
Which implies you asked me, which you didn't, therefore my question makes no sense.
It changed it from a statement to more of a question statement.
"I don't know where you live?"
The question mark indicates that it was a question and that it's obvious that it was also asking where you live...

The other one didn't work. Read it again. Nobody asked you that question so your 'reply' question makes no sense as there is no context for it.
