The way forward for all consoles is the internet. Even though PC game sales are something like 1/10th of console game sales, they get lots of rightly deserved attention for 1st person shooters and their internet facilities. Even now the press is in a stir, because the new hot bot skin is Osama bin laden.
If consoles would hurry up and get connected, we could be playing PD online, Tekken tourament for real, and even online RPG's. Dreamcast took a brave step, but stumbled and paid the cruel price for failed orginality in the games market. Sometimes good idea's pay off (goldeneye) sometimes they dont, but the game companies should always try.
I personally can't wait until the PS2 goes online (later this year or early the next, but Sony are hideously unreliable so its a case of wait and see) and gets a keyboard and its own screen. It will be totally cool.
I'm not sure what nintendo's plan is, but i think that it will be equally cool. When consoles finally all get online, we will all be playing each other on quake 5, even if we all have pc's ps2's and gamecubes, and that is the first step to peace in the neverending console wars.

Edwin25, I am just waiting to see something that works effectively as netgames on PC. When it does, fantastic. Until then, I am officially unconvinced.

Edwin, if Sega were bankrupt we wouldn't be getting games like Sonic Adventure 2: Battle, Phantasy Star Online and Super Monkey Ball coming to the GameCube!

you all seem to think that internet will be difficult for consoles. it wont. Take the dreamcast, sega got it internet ready all over the world, but because we were all waiting for PS2 and GC and XBOX no one bought the thing and they went bankrupt. Consoles have been getting more like PC's for years any way. Most consoles use CD's like PC's and most of they have a mouse and a keyboard.

yakumo, I think we need to see specs from Microsoft's side as to how this will run. PC gamers are used to the way in which Net Games take place. The details from logging in to playing games is mainly through application of the PC user. For consoles, an organised Switch On and Play system will be more difficult. I am sure that Microsoft have something up their sleeve but they have to make it quick, accessible and user friendly for the console buying market who are not used to waiting. In the future, this will be no problem I am sure. But now, they will have to show an unprecidented amount of support to get people up and running. Until then, I will hold my sceptical values.
