The "General Games Chat" forum, which includes Retro Game Reviews, has been archived and is now read-only. You cannot post here or create a new thread or review on this forum.
But still, these forums have had incredible growth over the last 12 months or so, but I don't feel it will grow any further without a bit of an overhaul of how things work.
The problem is, in my opinion, that there are too many posts for you to decide which ones to read, and you spend too long reading, and not enough time posting. You read through half a dozen posts that don't inspire a reply, and by the time you have found one worth replying to, so much time has passed that you have to go do something else.
I'm not sure if anyone else feel this way, but it's how it seems to me, given that I don't always have a great deal of time.
So, what are the solutions?
I propose a round the world race, in 80 days.
Sorry, no, that's one of my other projects.
I propose a forum 'search' being introduced.
I feel that if you could search under a number of categories, such as date posted, name of poster, key words in post, people would spend less time browsing through posts looking for something relevant to reply to, or would find a post that would be a more suitable place to put their thoughts, rather than starting a new post.
I can see this increasing the popularity of the forums, as we all have things we prefer to write about, people whose posts we prefer to read, and if we can immediately pin-point these, ukchatforums would be a more enjoyable site to visit.

Maybe when youve finished school, youll have the spelling and grammar to write some decent stuff......
i'll never win anything. boo-hoo-hoo
I know they have alot to do, but these extra competitions give me a slight chance of winning! (Being not so good at writing):-D
I think that there is something similar going on in uk.cheats as well, where you judge how good the cheats are. An idea of judging how good the new topics is another good idea, as long as you can see who did the review on how good the post is, the idea may work.
If that was implmented, you would only read pieces by your favourite writer. What happens if a newbie comes along who's really good, but hardly anyone reads their stuff, as people don't search for posts by them?
I think a better way would be to introduce a ranking system. People read a topic, then give it 1-5 stars. On the main forum page, the average number of stars is shown. So if a topic has had 20 votes, all of 5 stars, you know it's good.
This mthod could be abused, but if you made it so you can only vote for each thread once, a couple of freak results shouldn't out balance the overall mark too much.
This would also give newbies a chance. Some people have more time to browse the 'net, or s swifter connection, so they can look at more topics. If a newbie comes along, and is getting 5 stars for their topics, you know that it might be worth reading stuff by them.
And then you'd have the problem of people who actually write original topics getting overlooked because everyone else is just searching for topics on the console wars!
Maybe the idea of elected moderators could be used? These mods would be people who are knowledgable about the forum that they are moderating. Taking the idea further, they could somehow indicate good topics... maybe by turning the name of the topic to gold.

Only reviews. You have posted some decent things in the forums, but when you admitted to copying some reviews I felt very disappointed in you.
