I have the same drive as you (I think - Pioneer DVR-105) and I've written a few DVD-R's.
I also have an unmodded PS2, and so far it hasn't played any of them!
My Sony DVP-S725D plays them just fine though.
So it might be better to pick up a DVD writer (got mine for £100) and make your own DVDs. Also, it would either be better quality, or fit more on it than a VCD.
Also worked in my Xbox, but there are so many drives out there for the Xbox, it doesn't mean a thing to anyone else.

My philosophy (sp) is, I've got a DVD - I'll watch it on a DVD player, I've got a PS2 game - I'll play it on my PS2, I've got a VCD - I'll throw it in the bin or give it back because I know it's going to be crap :)
