Going to pick up a PS2 again in the next few days but wondered what the temprement was like. I owned one for 7 months before and didn't have any problems but I hear and read so many stories about how they brake down etc. I only mention this as I was thinking of getting a second hand one as I will be able to pick up a couple more games. However with the Disc errors and numerous problems I wondered if it would be better getting a new PS2?

Any information would be appreciated, thanks.

I bought mine second hand about 2 and half years ago. Its been perfectly fine for all that time, but just recently it has started to struggle to find games on CD-ROMS rather than on DVDs. I have to stand it upright to get it to recoginse the CD based games.

If you want a bundle Toys-r-us are pretty good. You can alos get 6months Interest free credit from them (obvioulsy depending on your age and credit rating).

Get a new one. Like you say - it's 50 quid more. Worth it just to be sure. My launch machine started playing up a couple of months ago. It wouldn't play cd based games - only dvd. I got 50 quid for it on ebay - even with the problems listed.
I went out and bought a brand spanking new one and haven't looked back. The build on the model you see in the shops now is much better than the launch model. It's had around 10 releases over the years, each release with numerous improvements.

Mine's a launch model and it seems fine. But then it could depend on how the other person treated it. It could be that they have left it on for long periods, which of course would lower the life-span. Get a new one?

Yep same here as well, never been cleaned either, never hoovered any dust from the fans or anywhere. Still going strong!

yep sitting it on the carpet is just about the worst thing you could do as the fan just sucks all sort of gunk into the inside of your machine

Thats what I was thinking. The 12 month warranty for an extra £50 is worth it just incase anything does happen. I was dread to get it back and just outside of the 2 week warranty that it would be faulty. I would have much prefered to get a new one for under £130 but I can't seem to find one anywhere for that price.

I will go into Gamestation and see what they have to say about one and I will want to see one running with a few games before I pay for it.

Thanks for the help though.

Same here.

Though you're probably better off getting a new one, for two reasons:

1. They apparently use slightly better DVD lenses now, on metal runners as opposed to plastic.

2. You will - obviously - get a full year's warranty, so if it does go wrong, it won't cost you anything to have it repaired.
