That's pretty much the stark reality of the PS2's life. It's going on for a year next month and so far there are literally only a few games that I would consider are absolutely essential purchases.
Gran Turismo 3 is without question a magnificent title despite some calling it 'short of what I expected'. SSX is another title that is testament to what the PS2 can do and let's not forget that it was there at the console's release either.
What's there apart from that though? Tekken Tag is good but not as good as hoped for. Crazy Taxi - a game that sold like mad on the Dreamcast resulted in a poor conversion that left the DC version looking better. Red Faction is a great game but visually a little dull with glitchy AI.
ISS was a disappointment and even the recently released Extreme G 3 (which I love) is capable of more.
Saying that though there are several games that I love (Shadow of Memories, Formula One 2001 and Crazy Taxi (despite the poor conversion)).
It's not all doom and gloom of course (and before you say it - I AM a PS2 owner).
Metal Gear Solid 2 is on the way, we're getting Virtua Tennis 2 (which potentially could be the best game on PS2) and some other dark horses including Ace Combat 4 are looming on the horizon.
I'm sure that some of you will disagree with me and that's fine but I know that of the games I have that there are only a few that I can proudly show off.
When you consider that I did that with around double that amount when I had my Dreamcast, it really is a surprise.
Let's have the backlash then.....
There are the two games you mentioned: SSX and GT3, but also:
Its down to opinion obviously, but I`d choose TimeSplitters over Goldeneye/Perfect Dark or any other FPS anyday. It may not have a top notch one player game (it`ll be solved in the sequel) but it has the best multiplayer around. The speed, and incredibe fun element makes it far superior. Never try playing Perfect Dark after TimeSplitters, as it`ll feel like slow motion.
Starfighter, which whilst it may be a little shorter than was hoped, it is still excellent. The replay value makes up for the length anyway, as you can replay missions with different ships, and more objectives. It has a fantastic control system, and a style of play that makes you feel part of the action.
Zone of the Enders was also another short game, but its looks were second to none upon release, which does show what PS2 is capable of, even if it doesn`t achieve a top game status.
Onimusha, which I feel is considerably better than Resident Evil CV, is also a fine game, with loads of detail to find. Both games though are top quality.
The PS2 isn`t short of innovative techniques either, with games such as Freak Out, Red Faction (with the geo-mod) and Kuri Kuri Mix.
What I`m trying to say, despite limited time as I`m off to a lecture in a minute, is that the PS2 has plenty of stunning games - enough to keep most people happy, as well as plenty of new original titles, and also newly improved sequels for those that enjoyed the originals. There are long games short games good looking games, fun games, fast games.. the lot. It has everything any games player needs, even if there are only a few games that encompass the lot.
Its done as well as any other console for its first year (in terms of games, and by a large margin, sales), and now its got a bright second year. The number of titles of the so called "AAA" standard are almost uncountable.
If you want to argue further, all my thoughts on this argument are in "Console Wars or Fan Wars?"
I think EA (like Sega) have discovered that if you've got a good title it needs to go out to the masses.
EA have always been all over the PC market and of course even the N64 saw its fair share of EA titles.
Sony do have a few exclusives but GT3 isn't everyone's cup of tea.
When MGS2 arrives things will pick up I'm sure and the £199 price is sure to shift a few hundred thousand units in the run up to Xmas.
I know my Dad has finally managed to secure a GT3 pack for himself this Xmas!!! The point there also shows that he's only interested in GT3 and isn't that aware of any other titles that he'd really want apart from Ace Combat 4.
COME ON SONY!!!!
This is damaging the user-base for the Playstation2 as well. People are put of with buying a PS2 because the games out are not to the ìhigh-standardî and do not use the machines power. I think the only reason I bought a PS2 was because I loved the original and I knew the PS2 would have a good future ahead of it.
Granted that it has a bright future, I want to play games now. Not next year, not next millennium, NOW! People who are planning on buying a console do not want to wait monthís on end before playing some great games. They want to buy a console that has loads of quality games and a console that offers a bright future. The PS2 only offers the latter.
So, assuming the PS2 has a bright future ahead of it, what will it have to offer us? Well, we are all excited about the talks of the new HDD, Internet access and soon online gaming. I know that the Dreamcast already features online gaming but Sony have waited patently for new technology to come so we can play brilliant online gaming with low ping rate etc. As soon as the Internet is released for the PS2 the things you will be able to do will be endless. I think most people are looking forward to online gaming more, but downloading MP3ís, maybe games, sending and receiving E-Mails will still be very exciting.
The PS2 really lacks quality games. Sure, SSX is a really, exceptional game but we can not keep using that as an excuse as to why PS2 is so great. I was quite shocked that SSX was going to be released on the Gamecube and the X-Box. With SSX being the best PS2 game, I think this is another issue that needs to be fixed. I am not talking about the issue of SSX going on different consoles, but I think Sony need to persuade game companies to make PS2 exclusive games for it. This will certainly increase the user base for it, wouldnít it? Maybe this is why people whom previously owned a N64 are going to buy a Gamecube instead of a PS2. The PS2 doesnít have many quality exclusive titles. Many people are delighted with the fact that the Gamecube has some fantastic titles that will never be made on any other console. Take Mario for instance. This is a game that I personally think people think of when they hear the words ìNintendoî Mario always features in a game with the launch of a console. This maybe is a point that the PS2 can not win.
Maybe we should just make the best of what we have got? Yes, we do not have many great games but lets just play on the good ones we have and wait patently for new games to be released.
I only own one game (GT3).
I've been waiting and waiting for months for 'essential purchase' games, and basicaly there hasn't been any.
It's been an agonising wait, BUT, we are now about to recieve a stupid amount of 'essential purchases.'
I've got 12 games on my most wanyed list, and they all come out over the next few months. Thats £480.
With Christmas approaching thers no way I'm going to be able to afford them all. and thats a shame. If only a few of them were released over the last few months.....
I wish I waited untill now to buy my PS2. The price has just dropped and theres a shedload of quality titles about to be released..
never mind. I'll be one happy PS2 owner around Christmas time.
On the DC I LOVED:
Soul Calibur
Metropolis Street Racer
Virtua Tennis
Le Mans 24 Hours
Sonic Adventure.
I've got 11 PS2 games and I bought the console because I'm convinced that things will pick up rapidly in the next 12 months.
I know I didn't mention some of the titles that you did (especially Wipeout and Rally) but some of them aren't my thing actually (Devil, WWF).
The PS2 WILL produce some awesome games I just thought there'd be more by now.
Cheers for the comment though! :D
