In fireworks you can fill a box with a linear fade.

Does anyone know how to make one of the end colours on the fade transparent?

You should still save the file as both a png and a gif. Use the gif for your web site and keep the png if you need to edit the picture.

You can do this in fireworks. Just go to

file>export preview

When you export it, it will be a gif.

You are using fireworks aren't you?

Do I need any programmes to run/edit this? it says when you've finished your fireworks thing export it to Dreamweaver or another HTML editing programme, do you need this? I thought you'd be able to make it a .gif file and load it staright onto your website.
