Once in a while I let an easy win slip out of my hands, then I never hear the end of it from the flukey person who profits from my slip up. I can be playing a single player mission on any game get right to the end within seconds of beating my best time/ unlocking a cheat/finishing a new level for the first time, and then something happens and I mess up big style. The mostrecent case I have had of this is: playing mario kart super circuit, about to finish first in the final raceof the cup and just as was crossing the finnish line only to realise in horror as I was crashing off the track that I still had 1 lap to complete.
The cause of this I will put down to lack of concentration caused by being distracted. Now my concentration levels are pretty high: I can do physics work and watch a film at the same time I can talk and play video games at the same time, but certain things can make my brain forget what it is supposed to be doing.
Some of the lesser effecive methods of being distracted during multiplayer sessions:
1. the elbow in the side method, size of force applied is proportional to the length of gaming distraction. usually resulting in reciprocated elbow to the side with more force
2. the hands in front of the face method, very distracting untill perpetrator is pushed away and controll is once agin resumed
3. the messing with your controller method, results in erratic movements of your "character or car...." results in game being paused and restarted
there are various other methods which then get you called a cheat such as 1 player pauses the game to go to the toilet/get a drink and the other players conspire to un pause the game to get an advantage over the other player.

The aforementioned methods are not what I was origionally talking about (I got sidetracked there) but the loss of concentration while gaming.
While watching the jeremy clarkson programme speed there was a segment with micheal schumacher and someone siad that micheal while driving at the limit could hold a conversation over the radio, I know gaming is not exactly formula one but it is similar in that you try to do more than two things at once.
(as you can probably tell I have not prescripted this)

reasons why I usually get distracted: winning too much - becomming complacent, trying out risky moves, new tactics gone wrong.........

Anyway back to what distracted me when I was playing mario kart.
I was playing my gba in the games room in my halls (the lighting is good for playing on the gba in there) and whenever someone would walk past I would pause the game so as not to get distracted too much and tohse peope who would speak to me commented on how "sweet " the gameboy was
(thats sweet in the eric cartman sense of the word and not the ahhhhh how sweet meaning).
Anyway, everything was going fine until some females walked past and I forgot to pause the game and screwed up my race. This kind of distraction is a new one to me as I usually play my computergames on my own in my room.
The same thing happens when I'm playing pool in the same games room, I play badly whenever people are watching me, but if someone is just passing through I seem to pull off some good shots. There is some gaming psychology in there somewhere.

I think I have finished writing this, but I will probably find that I have left stuff out later.

the arguments that it causes between my brother and sisters when something hapens like that it usually ends in violence later as they wind each other up.
Me, I'm fine if someone distracts me while playing , if it is someone I am playing with I get my revenge in the game.
however if it is someone who is not playing I really don't mind being distracted.

When I play games, normally Perfect dark, I kill the person annoying me, so they don't have a chance to play again, if it's a racing game, I try my hardest to beat them, and if I do, I can rub the insults in a little deeper.
If you take the games too seriously, well, enough to reset the game, whats the point in playing it? it's a bit of light entertinament, I know it's more of a culture to you guys, hmm.

Honestly I was not frustrated by the experience, it is just that little part of my brain becomes active that tries to make a fool out of myself (it usually succedes in doing this)

Mario advance was the more prefered game by the ladies as it took a lot less learning than mario kart to play

Heh, heh. I'm sure you're really frustrated by the experience but the way you put it, I can't help but laugh. Still, it's nice to see the GBA getting some appreciation - even if I'm sure that the distracting females in question would probably call you a 'typical man!'

Perhaps you could combine the two and use the GBA to initiate some flirty conversation? (Or not).
