I'm one of the very few who have never bought anything from Ebay, and I don't have a clue how the thing works. So I would like to know if anyone here has bought anything from there, and how payments are made.

I'm looking for Toy Story 2 for either the Dreamcast or Playstation (there is one on ebay just now, but I can't buy stuff till the weekend), and Toy Story for the MegaDrive. If anyone has these and wants to sell them then we can maybe talk, but I would like some advice about Ebay.

Thanks in advance.

Search eBay for microchips_15. I don't have anything for sale at the moment, but will do in a couple of days.

Oops. Thanks for pointing that out PM.

I'm using the same design ya see for all my auctions and I probably looked over that minor mistake.

Hey it'd be good if everyone on the forums submitted their "about me" pages here so we can see if theres anything good to buy :)

On the Quidditch thing, "As mentioned before - The CD is in a decent condition and I will ensure it arrives to you safely. " No big mistake, but you may as well correct it before someone bids. Nice listing design BTW.

Hmmm.

Just checked eBays "help" system on registering.

"By having credit or debit card identification from all sellers, eBay remains a safe place to buy and sell.

Your credit card will not be charged unless it needs to be used to pay for fees, which are charged only when you sell your items."

******

It states if I have a debit card I can sell on eBay.

I have a debit card. I cannot sign up to eBay.

Jeez - Even the help section is flawed.

eBay's registration didn't used to be so hard for selling or buying, but people abused it -as a numbr of forum users have admitted in the past, they ran up a bill, then disappeared, leaving eBay to foot their bill. Plus kids used to sign up to sell, and do the same, once eBay found they were kids eBay could not get their money for fees from them. Hence it's now harder to register.

Paypal's really safe, for buyers and sellers. Despite what cookie monster says, a buyer cannot just request a chargeback as easily as he thinks. They have to give a reason - such as not receiving the goods - and the seller then can provide information like proof of postage. If the seller then proves they posted the item with a proof of postage, and can show they told the buyer this, then the buyer themselves can be investigated for possible attempted fraud. I've only had one person try a chargeback, I sent Paypal the proof of postage and copy of the email I'd sent him, Royal Mail confirmed they'd delivered it, guy got banned from eBay, Paypal and charged an administration fee.

Because of how Paypal works for registering a credit or debit card with them, using a stolen one is hard - you'd not only have to have the card, but also the statement for it because you need information from the £1 charge paypal makes to confirm it's your card to become a verified buyer or seller. If you cannot confirm this info then you remain unverified - most seller's will not sell to you or allow you to pay them with Paypal if you are unverified.

One thing to be aware of is what a seller DOES NOT mention. DVD's are a problem area, there's piles of Hong Kong specials on, and more often that not you'll pay more on eBay than you would in a real shop or online. Take me, this week I've been selling Crime Scene Investigation Comic's, bought 3 for 4.99 a piece, sold two already at £10 + postage a piece. I sold SOCOM - which I bought from GAME for 19.99, for nearly £40 plus postage, yet you could buy it new from a proper retailer for that.

On electrical items, even if the seller says he will give you the receipt, you more than likely have no warranty - I'd never buy any hardware off eBay like consoles etc. Even if the person gives you the receipt, warranties often only apply to the original purchaser and passing it one is counted as giving it as a gift, hence the buyer has less rights warranty wise.

eBay can be fun, but also a pain in the neck - a lot of people bid and don't pay up, pushing the prices up for those who do.

Plus the feedback system sucks, but that rant can wait for another day...

eBay only acquired Paypal less than a year ago, and have been doing a lot of work, mostly concentrating on further integrating the Paypal service into eBay and vice versa.

Also, only since the eBay takeover have UK users been able to register debit cards on Paypal for use in UK based transactions. Prior to this, Paypal was a credit card only service.

And anyway, many of eBay's signup rules make perfect sense. the ISP e-mail is to prevent people signing up for countless eBay accounts for the purpose of self-spiralling their feedback. Any monkey can sign up for 500 hotmail accounts and quickly use a series of 20-30p transaction to make themselves look like a creditable seller before going on to rip people off.
